Randy, odds are, you had just stopped the car in the last 10 minutes or so. The ECU will not display the oil level (without other commands being given) for a period of time after the engine is turned off. There are ways to override this for say doing an oil change and you need an instantaneous level reading. I believe for your car, it is to press and hold the cruise CANCEL button on the steering wheel as you turn the car to the ON position (no engine running). Once the car is fully up, release the CANCEL switch. From there, you can go into the area where you check the oil level and this will allow you to read the level as it is at that moment.

From the Owners Handbook:

If you don't have an Owner's Handbook, you should get one.

P.S. Owner's Handbooks for both 4.2L and 5.0L models may be available soon in the Stickies. Stay tuned ...

Hi, I'd stop driver her until you resolve this. I bought a 2010 XKR with 45,000 miles on it that had a spun rod bearing due to the prior owner not checking the oil level frequently and having low oil level. I bought the car to rebuild the engine with my boys but they lost interest so I sold her on.

A short block will cost you $8,800 for the block alone. I have one in my garage if you need one!

Default Way off

This thread got off topic and turned a simple question into technical information of expansion of oil. I'm also wondering why my oil level reads see owners manual when I follow the correct procedure for checking my oil it is not showing me a reading,? Could this be caused by a fault light, engine light on the dash, or something of that sort I can't check my oil seriously?

Read the page out of the owners manual earlier in the post. If it says not available see handbook the oil likely has not cooled down enough for it to provide a reading. If it has a see handbook with an empty meter it's going to likely be atleast 1.5qts low.
