(It turns out that the car was sold Sunday afternoon anyway) I had a very long week of work, out of town Sunday-Wednesday, and when I got back I received a call from the owner of the 2010 XKR that I had briefly driven and seen during the previous week, wondering if I still had interest. I told him I wanted to take it to my mechanic to run the code reader and see if there were any problems. We met about 1:30pm, today, and after plugging in the reader, found that the only code was a bad cam sensor. I had just replaced one in my 2002 XKR, last week. But my mechanic was bothered by a knocking in the engine and upon revving it, said to me and the owner, that the engine was getting ready to throw a rod and would either need an engine rebuild or a new engine! Needless to say, the owner was in a state of shock. He thought this would be routine, and now he was wondering if he was going to make it home. After calming down a bit, he remembered that he had purchased the extended warranty and was still 3000 miles under its limits. He called the warranty company and was told they would pay for a full rebuild of the engine at the shop of his choice. At first I thought it would be a good idea for the rebuild to be done at my mechanic as I would know exactly what went into the rebuild, but I then suggested to the owner that maybe it was more prudent to have it done at his local Jaguar dealership as they would provide a factory warranty. I told the owner that so long as the rebuild was done at Jaguar, I would have little hesitation buying the car as the nervousness that I had about the 69K mileage would be alleviated by having an essentially brand new engine. Tomorrow, he is filing his claim with the extended warranty company and making arrangements with the large Jaguar dealership near him.

What do you guys think?
With so many Jaguar XK/XKR's out there for sale, I WOULD NOT TOUCH this. 69K miles...way to much...rebuilt engine or not. I just wouldn't want to deal with a premium car and rebuilt engine.

Suggest not to rush into this endevor and be patient and continue the hunt for your 2010 XK/XKR. I am always looking at the XK/XKR ads and there are always some very attractive deals. You may have to have the car transported if you find one out of state, but that is no big deal.

Good thing you checked the car out before buying. Smart move.

Very interesting! Essentially new motor is a great thing. Cam sensor failure probably caused all that damage to begin with a prior owner didn't know his car very well.

I am waiting to hear the outcome of his claim. My belief is that he will take the car to Rusnak Jaguar (very large dealership with Porsche, Audi, Jaguar, Bentley....) in Pasadena. I would assume they will first have to diagnose the problem and not rely on another mechanic's listening test. This is what will determine my decision. I trust my mechanic's instincts. He races and builds engines, and is pretty accurate. If Rusnak or the insurance company says it's just something minor, I would be very wary of going through with the transaction. If, however, there is a total engine rebuild, done at a Jaguar dealership with a warranty, then I would have no hesitation. Very nice car, with a couple of little things like a small scratch on rear bumper and some curb rash on a couple of wheels, but it's also going to sell in the mid-$30's for a 2010 with essentially a brand new engine (I hope) It's going to be a part time car as I will continue to drive my 2002 XKR convertible everyday. I just wanted to have a backup since I'm approaching 145,000 miles on it, and although it looks like new and runs very well, things start to happen with more frequency. I also go to the track 2-4 times a year with some friends, and it would be nice to drive something a little more modern than my 1972 Pantera. While the Pantera is a handful, it actually runs much better on a track all day long than it does for 30 minutes on the street in traffic.

I'll keep you guys informed as to what happens, I'm assuming I'll hear something this week.
