i've been here since i bought my XF in 2012. that was the last good year IMO, the last 5.0 N.A. engines... i think it may be time for a change though and i've always lusted after an F Type, BUT after driving a half a dozen or so i've come to the conclusion that the seats are just way too uncomfortable. soooooo, my thoughts are 2014 or 2015 XKR. i've only driven an XK convertible one time but liked it. i really like the idea of an XKR coupe though.

thoughts? recommendations? i am primarily concerned with comfort and reliability, as i suppose the other best alternatives would be a Lexus RCF or GSF (not interested in germans). thanks.

I find the XK/XKR vehicles to be highly reliable with a few quirks. Be aware that there is a water pump issue with 5.0L engines, particularly the earlier ones. You can find some threads on the Forum dealing with issue. In addition XK/XKRs only like well kept batteries; so, if you were to acquire one give serious thought to buying a CTek battery tender or the like to keep the car plugged in an you will have no difficulties. I/we have made several extensive road trips in our various XK/XKRs with nary a bit of trouble. Even though the design is at least 14 years old it is not dated though the electronics do not measure up to today's standards. If you are going to start looking, I suggest you look for a 2012+ as few if any changes were made after 2012 other than special series, etc. Good hunting and keep us posted.

Sit in one. If it talks to you, buy it. Shouldn't need a test ride to confirm you SOTP feel.

After an XK8 and two new XKs, I went for an XKR coupe. Best looking car I've ever owned... and quickest...and best sounding...and, well you get the idea.

You'll have to drive them and decide... The seats in my XK were good, but I did not find them to be most comfortable of similarly purposed cars. Evora's seat was way more comfortable, but lacked any power control. The Vantage as had more comfortable seat. XKR offers plenty of value. XKR is a quite tempting buy and prices are low. Is an LC500 too expensive?

you know i sat in an LC500 and i didn't think it was that comfortable. maybe i'm just getting too soft in my advancing years. it IS beautiful i think, but not really any faster than an RCF which would cost 40% less. i'm ready to go 50-75k. 100+ means i'm waiting to buy a gently used one in a couple of years.

If "comfort and reliability" is a main factor between Coupe and Convertible, the Couple will have fewer moving parts and the rear window won't fall out if it (small posibility), plus your hair won't blow in the wind.

For ME, the convertible will ALWAYS be the winner. I've had zero problems with anything not consumable (TPMS) in 63,000 miles. Not even the water pump (yet?)

No Lexus or German (like you said) will ever match the sheer car-for-money value you will get with any XK or R.

75K gets a nice DB9 or just a little more can buy a brand new Evora 400 which is like a Cadillac over the bumps compared to an XK.

Running costs on an Aston will be higher (penalty for running a hand-built car). I chose between a DB9, a Nissan GT-R and the XKR when looking for a new (used) car, and found the GT-R massively impressive but too harsh and the DB9 comfortable but a bit soft and significantly more expensive than the other two. I ended up with a firmer-than-normal XKR (Dynamic Pack suspension) as a cost-effective compromise. It's very quick, handles well and is not uncomfortable despite the firm suspension.

I get chronic numb butt after about an hour in a car and I must say our XK is reasonably comfortable for me on longer drives. The longest I was in the driver's seat of the XK was only on a 5 hr trip, stopping only once and I was not really uncomfortable. I'm not sue if the XKR ride would be much different than our XK though. There have been members here that have driven across the US and Europe also and created threads about them you can search for. Good luck in your search. It's obvious all of us here love our XK/XKRs

Agree. Test drove an XTS and eventually bought a Lincoln MKS. They are both road couches.

To the OP. For extreme comfort with quite a bit of *****, you can look at a Supercharged 5.0 XJL.

I have an XKR convertible and I’m in love. Like you, comfortable seats and a good ride are important. And little road noise. I can’t stand cars with a lot of road noise. My XKR satisfies me on all those things and more, of course. I have a 2014 and at least on mine, the seats can be adjusted electronically in almost any position so they should be comfortable for just about anyone. I haven’t driven a coupe and I imagine they’re quieter than the convertibles but when the top is up, it feels like I’m in a hard top. The car is very quiet and tight.

If you get a Lexus, I’m guessing it’ll be more reliable than any Jaguar. I’ve had two Lexus and they were the most reliable cars I’ve ever owned. The XKR’s have a reputation for being pretty reliable but I can’t imagine they compare to Lexus. My XKR has had a couple more problems than I’d like but I’m not sorry I bought it and plan to keep it for a while. It’s a fabulous car. I would buy one again and highly recommend it.

You're a Bruin, so what do you know? (USC class of '75). The seats in my 2010 XKR are good but not as good as in our Lincoln MKX. However, I'm comfortable in most applications. I wish the seat backs could recline more before they hit the protrusion from the side panel. As for the rest of the car, it's gorgeous, runs like a bat out of hell, and will give you a lot of enjoyment. I went to see the Lexus, and was disappointed in the interior as I found some of the bits and pieces quite odd. The XKR's interior is not the most exciting but the car's performance will make up for that. Good luck with your search.

Hi. I had an XKR then went on to an F Type. In early test drives of the F Type ('vert on 20"s, sport's (standard) seats) I found it to be excruciatingly hard and jarring, I disliked it intensely. My XKR (stock seats) were quite beautiful to sit in, at least the driver's side was when I got it (at 40,000km) and the passengers which was effectively new was quite firm but softened up with more use.

The f type is similar - the performance (where the headrest is integrated in the seat back) seats are initially pretty hard but soften up quite a bit after 5,000km or so. Also having a car with adaptive suspension is far better because the base has only one setting (**** pummeling) whereas the ones with adaptive suspension have the standard setting which is much softer, and then dynamic which is harder.

I like the Adaptive suspension setting in both my XE and Rapide. Having a softer option is the default choice for 90% of the driving.
