when you have a chevy cruze moment and try to drive with no coolant is when things go wrong. the only cars that can drive with no coolant are fords with cht sensors
We'll have to agree to disagree. Since the day I bought the car 25 years ago I have found those dials to be absolutely stupid. There is a conventional warning light in the Jag as well, which is fine, but the dials in my 1972 Triumph actually tell you what the temperature and oil pressure are which useful. The dials in the Jag don't tell you anything that the warning light isn't telling you.

They look cooler than idiot lights, though. In the X100 you either had a deplorable Nav system or three Idiot Gauges. I'd pick the gauges.

That is certainly true. The gauges do look good whereas the nav screen looks ugly and works ugly.

Just an update with my car. Replaced the thermostat and that fixed it for a while. Now radiator blown and possibly the head gaskets. They say that when head gaskets go, it is just better to replace the entire engine. I’m not willing to do that, so looks like I’m going to sell it for scrap. Such a shame. I really enjoyed this car. Had it for 11yrs and 108,000mi. More than any other car.

After only 108k that is rather surprising. Did you suffer from some serious overheating since you replaced the the thermostat?
If the temperature has been operating at the normal level for some time, I don't know why the head gaskets would blow now. The radiator leak is not that unusual after such mileage.
