Default Passenger Mirror: Mind of its own ...

My 2007 XKR passenger mirror moves with the preset seat about half the time. I use #3 memory preset to move the seat all the way back when exiting the vehicle, then I move it to #1 or #2 to drive after starting the vehicle...
The other half of the time it stays in a down position, like newer cars change to when their put in reverse - when the mirror does come up to the preset position it seems like it meets resistance and then releases and snaps up into place all at once, half the time it stays down.
Any suggestions on where to start wrenching in order to remedy?

Try re-programing the seats and OS mirrors. The settings for the right side outside mirror to go up and down and for both mirrors to close can be found in the menus controlled from the center screen. I have forgotten which screen it is. Maybe somebody else will chime in or you can find instructions in the owner's manual. If you don't have a manual you can download one at no cost from the stickies on the home page of this thread.

While the previous suggestions to reset via software are worth a try, this sounds like a mechanical issue. Disassembly of the mirror is likely needed to see what’s going on, maybe it just needs lubricant, hard to say.
Check the service manual, up in the stickies to see if there’s a procedure to take it apart.

Second the mechanical theory. My '07 would make that snapping sound when almost at its limit. Never really got a chance to look at it before car was totalled. I was thinking it might've been a worm gear skipping teeth on it's driven gear. Either damaged or one of the gears shifted position.

Actually, when the “skipping sound” occurs, you are at the limit.

Not sure if this helps, but mine never worked correctly with auto dip, it would always returned to a different position so I disabled it and never had a problem since.
