Post Picked up an XKR this week, am wondering about the engine noise

Hey all, super stoked to be part of the Jag ownership club. The car has 50k miles and is an absolute peach, however I have done a lot of research (maybe too much... ignorance is bliss afterall) and some people think the engine sounding a bit like a diesel is indicative of upcoming issues. Here's a video I took after a drive - the engine sounds like a diesel on cold start and after it warms up to full operating temp. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRlm...ature=youtu.be

What are your thoughts on this? Audio quality should be good enough to discern what I am talking about. Do all XKRs sound like this?

Besides that and some squeaky bushings that I plan to lubricate and spray with some rubber until I get them replaced, everything is perfect

It's a characteristic of the DI 5.0L. In addition to my own, I have listened to several other 5.0 models and each sounds much the same as yours. There are some discussions in forum threads where the sound is more of a knock that is associated with chain tensioner wear. That does not appear to be what you're video has captured so, as I am with mine, it should be of no concern.

Concur. It doesn't sound 'wrong' to me either.

Funny, I always thought mine sounded a bit like a diesel too. Good to hear it's normal. The dealer always gave the car a clean bill of health at it's annual checkup, so I never gave it much thought.

As many here would prescribe: do an Italian tuneup. May not improve any noises, but does provide a piece of mind and that satisfying grin.
