Default Quick 300 mile trip to Vegas

Hi Forum,

Last week I took a nice, brisk drive to Vegas. Coming from Phoenix, I took the I-17 to Flagstaff, then headed west on the I-40 then the 93 in Nevada. Driving up to Flagstaff with light to moderate traffic is a blast..I-17 is going up to the mountains of Flagstaff and it is gorgeous. While the road isn't what I would call a windy, twisty road, it's plenty curvy. The XKR behaved flawlessly. I kept thinking I could go a lot faster even though I was running about 90...at times I had to catch myself. Looked at the speedometer and realizing I'm in triple digit speeds...with the top down mind you. Once I got on the I-40...it has curves, but for the most part its a long straight highway. I only encountered traffic when I hit a small town like Willams, AZ or Kingman. Other than that, it was me and the highway and the car 10 miles ahead. Ten seconds later, me and the car 10 miles behind. LOL. With such light traffic, I drove accordingly, but not crazy. With the new mods, I could absolutely feel the extra power, especially going up the mountains and when I got the occasional idiot that decided I would not be allowed to pass him even though he's going 55 with a 75 MPH speed limit. The temperature drop with the top down was drastic. One minute it's 87 and sunny, the next its 63 and cloudy. I was able to pull over to the shoulder, put on a sweatshirt, and take off again before any traffic caught up...just too stubborn to put the top down. Crossing into Nevada was an eye opener. They appear the have an entire police force dedicated to catching the unsuspecting crossing the border at speed. My radar detector was singing like a bird..and they are everywhere...between hotels, in fast food parking lots, etc. You'll notice the amount of unlucky souls sitting on the side of the road awaiting their new speeding tkt. After being there a couple of days I see why...folks are driving drunk regularly. Mid day on the highway, I-215 I think, I saw 2 instances of cars losing control, screeching tires as they went sideways across all lanes....The first time I was like 3 cars back and as he skidded to the right, being that I drive with situational awareness, I knew there was no one next to me in the left lane...After a quick glance, I moved to the left lane, gave her a little throttle and shot right by...out of danger. Needless to say I was very happy to get back on the I-40, hit the gas and just cruise home...Great trip though....if you factor out my loses...good thing I paid my bills first..LOL Great drive....I'm considering another drive probably mid-May...don't know where to yet...maybe Utah...who knows

I've made that same drive in the Super V8 in the middle of the night with snow and ice at the end of December, 70-80MPH, the car stuck to the roads without missing a beat.

Bklynchris - Make your next drive to the North rim of the Grand Canyon and then go over to the Four Corners area to see Monument Valley. Did it a few years ago and it is well worth it. You can even go on Route 66 remnants.

Driven I-17 & I-40 towards LV (cut north at Kingman) many times. I like the old Route 66 alternative from Seligman to Kingman - two lanes, well maintained and deserted. AZ Highway Patrol has always heavily monitored traffic just west of Flagstaff.
The shortest route is via 93 through Wickenbug. If you want some interesting twisties cut north from 93 onto 89 at Wickenburg up to Ashfork. More remote is 97/96 to Bagdad, Hillside/Kirkland/Skull Valley/Prescott and Ashfork.

My favorite part of Utah is Interstate 80, between a little podunk called Knolls and west to Wendover, Nevada. In the middle of the salt flats. It is perfectly flat, smooth and straight (except for one very lazy curve). But best of all, there are Zero intersections, exits, entrances, no wildlife to worry about, and I've NEVER seen a cop out there for any reason. Sixty miles of nothing but a road. You DO have to watch out when within five miles of the border of Nevada though.
