Default Read about it but didn't think it would happen

Picked car up from valet, drove to restraunt for lunch, got out and closed doors, reached for key in pocket to lock doors only to realize it's still in console. Doors locked, unbelievable. Girlfriend called AAA they said 1 hour. Had lunch while waiting, AAA guy shows up said never done a Jag before. I showed him the key in the console with the unlock button looking at us. He pryed the window open 1/8" to install bladder, pumped up bladder to spread window 1/4" . Used his custome bent rod to unlock door. Door pop open, whole thing took 2 minutes.

Would be nice if Jag had a way to send a signal over the phone to unlock the doors.

Thanks AAA

I thought you were going to say that you went for lunch and your girlfriend waited locked in the car for an hour

Welcome to the club. Happened 3 times with me, all under very lucky circumstances. Once in my own garage, once with the window down and once with the spare key in my wife's purse (as we finally learned to ALWAYS carry a spare key). Could never duplicate it at the dealership, of course, so they could never fix it.

On my 1940 cadillac modified coup I removed the door/ trunk handles, so it is all operated by remote, so I installed a cable to the one of the doors, which has hidden access under the car , for the same reason I have had it happen to me with the keys .

Mybe I should design one for the jag I don't think it would be hard ?? .BL

Wasn't hard ordering several blanks from Fleabay, and having ACE hardware cut them for $5 each. If you need just one, it will set you back about $17 (or $125 from Jaguar)!
Now my fobs are full, I have an E-Key hidden on the car, and one on my key chain....
Already saved me once!

I've done it with my truck several times. It's easy to do when you are distracted or need to gather some tings together before leaving your vehicle. For the members who have had this happen what model year do you have. I'm curious to know if it happens with the 2012-on model year. My 2013 alerted me once when I tried to lock my doors by pressing the handle button.

I hope this never happens, I know there is a setting in the infotainment system to not lock the doors automatically which is how mine is currently set.

My 2008 XKR doors do not lock when I get out of the car unless I manually lock them with my fob. They do automatically lock when I get up to about 10 mph. Maybe they are set that way in the info center?

The only thing that happened to me is once when I stopped at the mailbox I left the car running and took the keys w/fob and left them in the mailbox and then when I got to the store I shut the car off. When I came out car wouldn't start so I had to walk back home and get them back out of the mailbox. Thankfully I was only about a mile a way. Haven't done that again YET.

It happened once with my '05XK and 3 times with my '08XK. It has not happened, yet, with either our '12XJL or '12XF. Of course, the reason COULD be that we have never left the key inside in either of the new cars.

Fairly recently someone complained on the XJ forum of this happening. He did not state the year/model. I asked for it but, have not seen a reply.

Weird. The manual says:

Keyless locking will only activate if the Jaguar Smart Key is outside the vehicle. If no Smart Key is present. two audible error warnings will sound.
So, how is anyone able to lock the car with the key inside?

That is the point of the conversation.... It has already happened to several people, several times....

Trying to replicate the problem to the service manager is impossible because it happens so seldom.

Two times it happened to me were very bad. The first I was a hour from home with, my jacket (fob in the pocket), cell phone and wallet were all still in the car! AAA saved the day.
The second I was on my way to take my mother to the emergency room and needed fuel... Key in the cup holder and locked out at the station.... Lucky I already had the hidden key by then.

I don't understand. The car locked itself?? Or you hit the lock button on the door and realized your keys were inside?

I would be very concerned if the car locks itself as soon as you close the door.

I have an 08 XK and yes the door locked itself. Ebay has the blank keys for $11-12.

How do you used the hard key to open the door and start the car? Does the cover on the driver side door pry off?

Hard keys not that big should be able to keep in wallet.

The e-key opens the drivers door or trunk(pinch/pry the cover off the key hole on the handle) .... It will not start the car, just get you inside to retrieve the fob.

Ebay

I bought 5 blanks from China

I had this happen to me once with the 08. Never with the 12 (yet). I just bought two blanks off of fleabay for $20. I'm going to get them cut and keep on my wallet, just in case.

Yep, you SHOULD be concerned because that is exactly what happened to me 4 times with my XKs. No one hit any buttons, the FOB was inside the car with no one near. You just hear a click and your're locked out.

I guess the fact that I keep my fob in my jeans pocket has protected and will continue to protect me against this. Unless I leave my pants in the car...
