This is the procedure for the XF. Should work on the XK.

1. Press and hold the rear fog lamp switch (before the ignition is on).
2. Press the start button without applying the foot brake (do not start the engine)
3. Release the rear fog lamp switch (1sec)
4. Press and hold the trip computer cycle switch (within 1sec).
5. Press and hold the rear fog lamp switch. (within 1sec)
6. Continue to hold the trip computer and rear fog lamp switches.
7. The message center should display "resetting service mode" and then "service mode reset"
8. Release the trip computer and the fog lamp switches and turn the ignition off.

This worked great! I just took my XKR in for service and they didn't reset the service reminder so this kept me from having to take it back. The first couple of attempts didn't work because I wasn't doing it fast enough, but finally got it right.

HouTexJag,

XF owners said the same, you have to be really quick as you going through it.

I am glad the procedure worked for you and saved you the trip.

Edit: maybe the moderators can add it onto the "How To" section for future use.

Default Service Mode Resetting - Stays On

Hi - I have a 2010 XK Convertible and am trying to Reset the Service Indicator after oil change. The procedure described works but it stays on 'Resetting Service Mode' for well over three minutes. Will not got to 'Service Reset' mode. What's wrong?? Thanks a bunch.

I've had the same issue today, Must have tried 20-30 times with the same result. I got stuck in "Resetting Service Mode" message and then nothing else. Then, I did 2 things

1. Disabled Bluetooth connection to my phone
2. Switched display from showing trip mileage to current speed

After that, it worked on the first try. My guess is that #2 two made a difference. Computer was fooled into resetting the trip counter instead if resetting the service light.

I had that same problem. I did the procedure a couple months ago and it never confirmed service reset. I left it and after taking it for a drive the service reminder disappeared. I installed Steve's remote top module for the convertible top earlier this month which causes the service message to reappear after having the battery disconnected. I tried the procedure again after installing the module, which is great by the way, and the same thing happened. I'm unable to take in for a drive because it is now up on jack stands for an ediif, brake fluid flush, and transmission fluid change.

Thanks for the info. How did you find this?

Default Service Mode Reset - XK

In addition to NOT having display in Trip Mileage - you must be VERY FAST in the procedure. They say 3 Seconds - faster is better.

I've found that a very steady tempo is important. I do mine on a one-button-per-second tempo and it works every time. Course I practice it a couple times before attempting it.

I can get mine to show the "resetting" message but it never completes the process. It stays with that message for more than 5 mins (my fingers got tired) and never confirms reset. Any ideas? Thanks!

Had my humble assistant perform the "cycle ignition" step - saved a few milliseconds off the reset window.

I have had an xk 4.2 for more than 16 months and I have never had any service alerts.
I understand that there is an alert by time and another by distance.
How long does one alert go and at what distance traveled does the other alert go?

I am not convinced that the 4.2 litre cars display the message. I can't find it in the Owners Manual anyway. It is only mentioned in the ones for the 5 litre cars.

For me it is a joy that the xk 4.2 does not indicate the service and should never be reset.
I consider these resets and service indicators to be one more way to make dealers earn money.
If you have a car you have to be aware of the maintenance that must be done and when it must be done.
I have more cars that indicate maintenance and I have never listened to them.
I always do the maintenance much earlier than the manufacturers recommend.
I think there is a trade war of automobile brands to see who does the most distant maintenance besides using these computers only to get you a good bill for nothing.
