Another category: old gearheads such as myself who live in urban areas (most of the year) and lack any garage space whatsoever. Hell, I've barely got a toolbox out here.
(As to this particular thread: I've changed my share of plugs over time, but given the additional challenges detailed in this thread-- and the fact that it's probably a one-time job for must of us-- I'm happy to pay to have it done at my dealer shop. I'm at 80K miles and am 11 years from the in-service date, so it's close for me.)

Oil changes, however: just did my first one using an extractor and I'm a convert. Do yourself a favor: get an oil extractor and try one. Even the filter is accessed from above. It's easy-peasey and makes me feel (a little) like a mechanic again...

I already own two extractor pumps, last one I got cost me a mere £10/$12.50

I still use them on other cars, but as I can't get the Jag oil for anything close to the £10/$12.50 per liter that my Indy can, I leave it to them, they'll even sell me the 1l bottles top-up bottles for £10+tax

Here's the cheapest I've found this side of the pond (£17.62 per liter delivered)

I don't think dealers focus on making money out of you for servicing, they look at the bigger picture - make it need a lot of things and suddenly a trade in for a new car doesn't seem like such a bad idea. Our local Toyota dealer are embarrassing - on a recall recently they sat me down for a serious consultation - one of the big issues "and that number plate bulb [big sigh]...it's gone!". The long list of near nothing was about to run into hundreds of pounds, or for just £Blah blah per month you could have this shiny new [insert big wheeled stupid looking motor with more sensors and stuff waiting to go wrong at my expense]....

Odd comments about people working on their cars - I thought a Jaguar forum was just a place for people to talk about Jaguars, whatever they need?!?
I am doing lots of work on mine, but 2 years ago I just paid people because of a lack of time (big mistake in my case).
And battery talk - what??? Everything in this car seems to hinge on the battery - it is the heart and guts of the operation. George I don't know what your outburst is trying to achieve, the only thing it can achieve is to put people off posting for fear of asking a "stupid" question - which is a shame, because most of what you post is really helpful.

On 11/7, digital forensic analysts were able to put the time of intoxication sometime between the hours 4:19 PM and 6:22 PM. It was then that George05 began a happy hour alcohol binge - one he may have regret the next morning. Considering the proximity of 4:19 PM to 420, the possibility of marijuana was also not ruled out. As he spiraled out of control, in a fit of rage, he logged back into the Jaguar forums to let members know how he REALLY felt about DIY spark plug replacement. George05 has not been heard from since that day, and like an unused Jaguar, the case has gone cold.

Sorry, been watching a lot of Forensic files lately and couldn't help myself =]

The actual fact is that the Service Department is the highest money-maker for nearly every dealership. The New Car sales is a small percentage of their profit although it has the most income, because all those cars cost them a LOT.
The profit is like such, high to low:
Service Department
Used Cars Sales
Financing Office
New Car Sales

Sometimes the less reputable dealers have their Finance Office at a higher profit due to all the ways they cheat their customers with added fake fees, financing charges, add-ons and the like.

CeeJay is 💯% correct...fixed ops aka service is the real reason to have a franchised dealership almost guaranteed recurring revenue representing services with massive margins (I’ve seen several JLR dealers markup parts prices double or more than MSRP), high labors rates, billable job times more than actual time and guaranteed warranty pay. Unless F&I boosts profit per transaction, new car sales barely makes enough to keep the lights on.

Yep. I'd be one of those who'd flip #2 and #3 on your list.

Story: many many years ago,when my stepdad was selling cars, his advice was to mention if you intend to pay cash right up front, for a few reasons.
Now the situation is completely reversed-- don't mention your intent to pay in cash until AFTER everything else is agreed - price, warranty, extras etc. You wipe out their last and best revenue stream and they're NOT happy.

I was told that too by someone who is very experienced at buying new or nearly new cars quite aggressively - also applies to Window and Kitchen salespeople. I honestly thought it was where all the money was - the finance from selling new cars; didn't realise servicing /parts was a big prize too

Woah. I came here to learn about spark plugs, not hot heads!
One characteristic of gearhead (petrolhead) communication is occasional busting of chops. It is a form of bonding. I do find that it is hard in text to gauge mood, inflection. There have been other thing in this forum that seem to be distractions from the real point of information and education about our great Jaguars. I am hoping some if this is less tactful on purpose.

In any event, I have 70K miles on my 08 XKR and was not planning to change plugs until 100K (if I still own it by then). Was wondering if installing E3 plugs would be an alternative.

Ok, flame away... <adding a to any response might help determine if there is playful banter at work.

If you choose to replace, only relevant recommendations I have:
- get yourself a nice swivel socket and a few different extensions to get into the plug wells
- verify correct gap in each new plug - my replacements were not gapped correctly when they arrived
- a $20 boroscope from Amazon will allow you to check out the cylinder heads and walls while you have the plugs out - also very useful for other inspections, too

Compared to other things, spark plugs are cheap. Go to Rock Auto, get the cheapest iridiums you can find, install them yourself, and be done with it. You'll probably never have to deal with plugs again for the length of time you own the car. One less thing to lose sleep over. I always used copper anti-seize as well (I think it helps prevent galvanic corrosion too), but be careful - you can over torque the plugs with the anti-seize on.

Re: spark plug choices, personally I'd stick with the NGK AJ8 4575 (iridium). I changed mine at ~75K miles. The plug on cylinder 8 is a bugger. I went through the brake fluid port to extract and replace the plug. As other have mentioned using some anti-sieze compound is a good idea.
