Default Steering Column creak (groan)

In the last week or so my 2012 vert has developed a creak or groan when moving the column up or down. It happens only intermittently. Today I took my vert into the dealer as to whether or not this could compromise the safety of the car as we are going on a road trip for a week and I want to take the Jaguar.

Anyway the service writer took the car into the shop and had a tech look at it. Response - first time he has ever seen (heard) this on an xk, but has seen it on on XFs a few times. Final remark, maybe needs a new steering column, but does not impinge on the safety of the vehicle.

Has anybody else had this problem? If so, what did you do about it? thanks.

Sorry to hear about your problem Ralph. Did they say what exactly was wrong with the steering column? Sounds like a bushing. I'll be in LA next week. I have a very busy schedule. If I have some time, on my way in to LA from Calabasas, I'll give you a call. Maybe we could meet for coffee at the same location as last year.

I had this same issue on a 2011 XKR. I drive with the sterring wheel all the way in and down. When I would get in and out of the car, the steering wheel would move up or down automatically, clicking non stop. It sounds more internal, but its not (unless your sound is different than what I experienced). Dealer said it was common, they've seen it many times, it just needed to be lubricated. I didnt watch them do it, but it was explained to me that the plastic casing that goes around the steering column rubs when it moves up and down, lubricating solves the problem.

I sure hope that dealer would call other dealers/service to ask if they have run into this problem before replacing an entire steering column.

I have noticed it several times on my '12 XKR vert...... It seems to happen when the car's interior is quite hot. Mine sounds like yours Ralphwig. More like a groan. But very noticeable. Haven't done anything about it because I probably couldn't replicate at the dealer....

Thanks for the responses. Glen, I will be out in the desert all week. Too bad! I would enjoy meeting you again. We leave tomorrow and return next Saturday, otherwise would love to meet.

I am taking the xk to the desert as I have been assured there is not a safety issue. I think the problem I have is very similar to Jeff's. Regards,

I had the same issue with my 2011 xk vert. Went to dealer and they ordered new steering collum. The service rep at the dealership says Jaguar is aware and they, Jaguar, said replace it not fix it. Had to leave the vehicle. Got Jag loaner. Ever since no problem.

It diid it again today after the car was sitting out in the sun for a couple of hours. Mine definitely does it when the interior is hot.

beh2010, did you take yours to Island Jaguar in Merritt Island?? And how long ago? I've had great service from them even though I didn't get my cars from them. Thanks.

Jffcurt, Yes I did go to Jaguar of Merritt Island. Call ahead and ask for Mark in service. Went there in January. They are very good and take good care of Jag owners.

Default Steering wheel groan

I currently have this problem on my 2010 X KR convertible. Will lubrication repair it? I am out of warranty.

Thanks

Jaguar ended up replacing my steering column under warranty. If I were you, I would go to your dealer and ask them what they will do about it as you are aware of other people having the same issue. Then I would try Jaguar NA. You may be able to get them to stand all of or some part ofthe cost. Good luck!!

Hi Ralph,
Mine groans (much like a Canada goose honk) everytime I start the car and it goes to the memory position. It's a momentary annoyance among annoyances that bother me so much more, so I've not done anything to address it yet. Too many other things to fix first.

Have a good time in the desert, I'm sure I'll run into you in the Palisades soon as I seem to keep bouncing from neighbor to neighbor in the Highlands redecorating or remodeling their homes.
