Default Thoughts please! Is this spoiler finish normal??

I've started a new PST as going off thread in the Mina spoiler post!

Im not happy after fitting my RS polyurethane rear spoiler. Fit is great but didn't notice the 8 or 9 small dents/dimples in the top.

It was originally white and I've just had it painted to black. Looking at it full on, you don't see them and it wasn't until I've fitted it that you see them looking from the side.
I've just had a dent guy round and he couldn't sort it so advised taking it back to the paint shop.
ive spoken to the shop and he said probably all like that! How many of you have this??

He said you wouldn't have seen it as originally white and now the black shows it up. I had fibreglass spats painted as well so he said the oven would be turned down (60 degrees??).

Could that have caused it? I've also slackened off the fixing bolts but they aren't anywhere near the upper skin so now sure not that.
All very strange so thoughts please and what's best to do. Skim with flexible filler and repaint? Just a pig to take off again!

Is there a way to uploads a video on here or just through a YouTube link?

Just Use the "Link" button from the reply menu (looks like a few links of a chain) and paste the Youtube link in the popup window.
'
It should convert it to Video Window after you post the message.

Hope that helps,

Dave

Here is the video link:
look at the reflection in the paintwork of the black stripe distorting when going over the dimples!

Yep looks like the black made them stand out. The only way to fix is to fill and sand and repaint or live with what you have.

It's polyurethane, all sorts of oddball stuff happens during the cure process. Look at old bumpers etc. to see how they shrink over time.

Per repair, fill or sand smooth. Body shop should have seen the issue when the glide coat was wet or at least when they sanded the glide coat. Looks almost like they over sanded it or the primer settled.

Are you indicating the shop's oven was at 60 degrees or lowered by 60 degrees? It is possible they may have distorted it if it was improperly cured in an oven. Plastic and heat don't get along unless you are intending to change it's shape. Also, if you didn't notice any distortions prior to repainting (regardless of the white color) I'd think that is the source.

Thanks guys, always good to get opinions so make the right decision!

I know he said he cured at a lower temperature but can't remember exactly what temp so could be wrong. I had wing gill vents, spoiler and the fibreglass rear bumper spats all painted so all went in together for curing.
What is done, is done so looks like it needs to go back for sanding and filling with flexible filler. It will annoy me every time I look at it otherwise!
I don't think they are going to admit blame so not only do I have the removal and refitting time, probably going to have to pay as well! 😟

One last question, no one else has these sort of dents/dimples on your spoilers? He wanted me to look at others before discussing again.

One thing to remember; Mounting the spoiler may induce forces which could change the shape of the entire thing. Since the Poly would/could deform with those mounting forces, it should be refinished when attached to the car, or at least to the boot panel.

Another thing, when the vehicle sits in direct sun on a hot day compared to a no-sun cold day, the shape will change due to expansion/contraction and at a different rate than the substrate alumin(i)um boot lid.

Yes I know what you mean Ceejay although it hasn't been out yet in the sun (what little we have had!). They do need pressing down at each side firmly so that the clips locate home but it hard to tell if that would cause such isolated bits but as you guys have said, the material can do all sorts of things. The dent guy actually said most were proud and if if metal, they would need tapping down rather that up which is even stranger.

Im always worried when it comes down to working when fitted on the car. Don't like the thought of tools near the rest of the paintwork and the masking off well enough!

Its has been a long journey so far with this car!!

Ask yourself if you think Jaguar's Q/C folks would let a car leave the factory with divots in a highly visible area like that?

I have an original Aerodynamic Pack spoiler on my '10 XKR which is basically the same thing and it is perfect, no dimples at all.

If you believe it to be an issue the shop you used caused, and they want you to pay to re-do it; go to another shop.

I rang the shop again today and they want to have a look to see if can be resolved. I tried not to get into a 'blame' argument as just want it sorting so will keep you all posted!
Would be nice to get things right first time eh and sure not alone! Used them a few times before and generally good work so fingers crossed can sort it on the car without removing again?

No ripples in mine. If they are a good shop they should not charge to make it right as they should have caught it the first time. I doubt fitting it has anything to do with it assuming you didn’t torque the 5 screws too much.

The 3 torx screws behind the brake light were just hand tight on the end of a screwdriver but the bolts at each end I did do very tight though using a wrench. The screws/bolts don't attach to the upper skin that floats on its own so I can't see that would be an issue? I did try slackening them off and didn't make a difference. The dents are more in the middle and nowhere near the bolts.
