Sold back to Buddha for $46k.
There is a perverse incentive: its 4 hours to replace the cam actuators or 40hrs to replace the engine, and you can endup with more issues. Plus the new engine from JLR can be sold for $15k.

Sure it's used, but so is the body it'd go into. $12k ain't horrible. Plus, a free transmission! Besides, 102 HP/liter is better than the 430 hp for the 6.2 liter chevy stuff (69 hp/liter).

Sort of a related note..........
If anyone out there wants to ship me a 'broken' long block 5.0 S/C, I'd be grateful for the chance to bore/stroke it and change the blower for something different. Heck, even a N/A one would be good.

$12k for a car that is missing everything but the engine and trans.
Did someone bemoan depreciation earlier.

Get this; 5.0 JLR engines (there are several on fleabay)
Are selling for 10k with 100,000 miles on it.
WOW. Amazed that they so prized, even with so many miles.

it doesnt seem to be due to rarity, its technically more money that Bentley W-12

I must admit, I was a bit shocked at the cost. My service guy went through the numbers and according to him a long block is twice the cost of a short block, and then there is the dealer/JLR time estimate for removing and engine, prep, installing an engine, and whatever time is spent verifying everything was done to spec. I know a few indie shops that will drop a basic V8 in for about 2K. What's the multiply for a dealer, and then a Jag dealer?

Q&C. It doesn't surprise me about used 5.0s. I had checked when I got this news and found a couple low mileage and complete LBs in the 20s. Apparently, 500hp super-charged engines come at a premium. Consider used Ferrari motors range between 24K and 78K on Fleabay! What would a Ferrari dealer charge to pull one and install another?

Still, it is somewhat mind-boggling to me. JLR went through all service records and came to the conclusion (after 4 days) that there was no owner negligence (I'm the second owner at 8,900K) so I'm guessing this was either a manufacturing issue, or a service issue, either of which would have them on the hook.

I doubt they will sell me the engine. It would make quite the two wheeler though...

As I learn more I will update this thread. The one thing my service guy (he's so eager to please, replaced the chrome on my key because it wasn't looking new!) had told me that might be slightly disconcerting is this isn't the first 5.0 he's had to replace. I do hope it's the last one he has to do for me.

I did find this as well, and although it refers to an XF engine, it's still relevant as it describes what can happen in a perfectly sound motor even with proper oil levels.

"Apparently my car has suffered a catastrophic crankshaft failure caused by a main bearing sleeve rotating inside the block, causing oil starvation and effectively welding one end of the crank while the other end continues to spin. I'm not an engineer, but I gather this is quite bad.

You usually spin a bearing due to to low or no oil.

Back in 2000 I bought a an XJR which turned out to be a Nikosil engine which Jaguar replaced in 03. At that time they replaced it with a longblock that had all of the accoutrements attached to it including the supercharger. If my memory is correct the cost of the long block before labor to pull the old engine and put the new one in was between 10,500 and 11,500. Point is I find the $46k number difficult to believe.

That can be a cause, but it the case of this particular XF it wasn't. And I've spun crankshaft bearings and rod small-end bearings in hi-po motorcycle engines more than once, and not because of low oil. But until I have a definitive answer from the dealer (maybe tomorrow) it's all speculative.

If it was a low oil condition, there's still some concern since it would have happened in the course of two-three weeks, which would still indicate a premature failure of some critical part or system.

Maybe they need a tax write-off?

I was poking around looking at replacement parts for my Esprit, and a new engine listed at $42k, about what I paid for the car. It really is insane when compared to other engines.

How accurate is the electronic oil level monitor?

I have slight ticking occasionally that goes away after warming up.

I check the oil level electronically and always says OK..

The R is back. Observations on a zero mile engine: no ticking, much more linear pull.

The service sheets are as much as I know.

A cash offer of $10K Can. (US ~$8K) would probably get you this...

Only risk is the drive-train may not be in the condition they state.

Yeah, I don't think he knew the absolute horror which was in store for him with these plans..... "Was planning to move all drivetrain, sound system and seats to 67 Mustang but my plans have changed..."
