XK driveshaft flex coupling replacement
Put the XK through the MOT in September everything fine except for an advisory notice for the differential end of the propshaft flex coupling starting to crack in several places.
Checking the workshop manual it stated that under no circumstances must the coupling be replaced, the conclusion would be that the whole propshaft at exorbitant cost would need to be replaced.
After some searching online I found the correct part on EBay at a cost of £49 free delivery made in Germany from Febilstein, soon as I received it I got to work.
If you are doing this yourself there are some points to note:
To enable the prop to be rotated turn on the ignition, put the shifter into neutral, release the e brake then switch off the ignition and close the door.
There are 6 bolts, nuts and washers - 3 bolts are 17mm, 3 bolts are 15mm, all 6 nuts are 18mm - I made sure to paint mark the bolt heads to put them back in the same places.
These bolts are very tight, I used a ring spanner and a wrench extender to break them free.
On the differential flange there is location spigot which slides into a rubber seal on the flange of the propshaft, this only cannot be seen until the coupling is released.
With all the bolts removed use a prybar to move the propshaft longitudinally enough to clear the spigot and then the propshaft can be pulled down clear and the coupling removed.
When replacing the new coupling in place make sure the bushes on coupler are located in the counterbore recesses in the both flanges.
