Default XK Start Button 2007-2009

The start button/switch in the 2007-09 XK is well positioned to collect dust, dirt and Coke spills. Disassembly for cleaning and lubrication is relatively simple if you know how.

Remove the two metal clips used to secure the switch in place, then depress the black plastic tabs to slide the internal parts out of the bottom. That's it!
WD-40 and silicone grease may be used for cleaning the sliding parts. Wipe off excess with a clean cloth. Barely perceptible lubrication is enough.

Start Button and ASL are similar.

Lift the end of the metal clip to release. Push with another tool toward screwdriver shown lifting the tab.

Depress both plastic tabs (one on each side) to release the internal assembly.

Careful prying may be necessary. Tabs are resilient but may break.

Internal assembly.

ASL parts shown. Start switch is similar.

Good Luck with your project!

Bill

@GGG could you please add this to the sticky section and maybe add the word "Disassembly and Cleaning" to the title?

Default Removing Switch?

Curious what you used to pry the switch out being that it sits surrounded by wood?

Remove the chrome bezel and wood panel. Once the wood panel is free, spring clip fasteners on the underside are obvious.
Use your favorite "soft" tools to remove the chrome bezel and then the wood panel. They are attached by friction fasteners.
Gently pry them up. Typically, plastic tools are used for removing trim. A credit card or similar may be used to protect bearing surfaces.
