Default XKR 5.0 radiator fan not working - overheating

Hi

Yesterday I got red warning info that car was overheating. I noticed that the radiator fan was not working. Temp went as high as 120C

Today I went for a short spin, connected obd to see the temperature. I got to 90 C and still no fan operation.

where should I look for solution? Fan replacement or maybe some control module / relay?

Troubleshooting steps are in the Workshop Manual in the Stickies at the top of this Forum.

Thank you. I did look at it. From what I understand the control module is part of the fan. My question was whether someone has experienced similar issue. It could be fan/module or problem with ECU / temp sensors. I hope that it is the fan. Expensive but at least easy to solve...

Several people in here in the last year have experienced this, so you are not alone.
You could probably find their posts using the SEARCH option in this forum.

One of my Rovers just started something similar. I reckon the fans are the same or at least similar (same gen engine) Sometimes the fan runs, but many times it doesn’t run at all even if sitting idling for 30 minutes. Viscous fan’s not that expensive but I’m having the main dealer confirm the cause this week before I replace the fan blindly. If it’s useful I’ll post up the diagnosis.

I'm having similar issues with my cooling fan... It's not turning on. I've read through the service manual but can't find any mention of a diagnostic procedure to troubleshoot.

There are no error codes related to the cooling fan that I'm seeing.

The 80A mega fuse has continuity so that's not the issue.

Is there anything else I should be checking to determine what's causing the issue?

There is not very much information available for this problem...

If you have access to SDD you can control the fan using that so it may be worth trying to see if it will actually spin up. That would at least prove the mechanics are OK.

I have SDD, but I don't see anywhere to manually control the cooling fan... Can you give more information? Do I have to be in a specific mode to see these settings?

Edit: I'm going to reinstall SSD and start from scratch to rule out the possibility of the software not working properly. I got the occasional script error, so maybe that's why I'm not seeing options to manually control the fan.

Instructions to get to the fan settings through SDD would still be appreciated.

Unfortunately SDD isn't very intuitive! I haven't played for over a year and I don't have it plugged into my car at the moment but I have fired up SDD and grabbed some screen shots.

You need to open the Datalogger by selecting Measurement Applications

That doesn't appear to do a lot but you then need to click on Recommendations:

This screen will appear and you click on Run:

Welcome to the Datalogger!

A menu of options will appear and the fan control is actually under Engine System:

Select it in the menu then click on the plus/minus button to enable the tool (a black start icon should appear next to the menu item:

Click on this icon to go to the logging screen:

Click on the Start button to start logging:

This is where is gets a little hazy!
Because SDD isn't plugged into my car I am getting an error but I think you can control it from this box, possibly by editing the value:

I don't think it was very obvious but have a play and if you can't work it out, or it is the wrong box, I will plug SDD into my car and refresh my memory.

Could not have asked for a better reply. Incredible.

I'm able to toggle the pwm percentage (percent), but the fan isn't spinning. Hoping someone can confirm that playing with this setting while the ignition is on (engine off), should indeed spin the fan, and the fact that mine isn't means it's a bad module.

I'm going to play around with some other controls to make sure it's not a user or communication error.

I think I only played with it with the engine running because I was monitoring the A/C pressures but it is very obvious when you set it to 100%!

Considering that I'm able to use the laptop to control other things, but not the fan, I think that it points to a bad fan controller that's built into the motor.

As a side note, can SDD be used to control or diagnose the auxiliary cooling pump for the supercharger? There is an indicator for if it's running or not, but nothing to control it.

I'm having what appears to be an issue with my aux pump. It's supposed to turn on when the ignition's switched on but I do not hear anything from the pump and the coolant's definitely not circulating in the intercooler circuit.

EDIT: I've got the new style JLR Magna pump fitted on mine (not X150) with 3 wires, I've considered pulling the pump and applying 12volts to see what happens.

I was able to apply 12V to the aux pump, and nothing happened... So it's dead.

The replacement radiator fan worked immediately when it was plugged in, so SDD is a good tool to determine if the fan is faulty, even though it doesn't throw a code specifically calling out that part.

I can only control fan speed with the engine running. As for the pump, I couldn't find anything in SDD either to command the pump on or off so I replaced the pump with a new one. Of course afterwards discovered a way to test the pump whilst fitted, stall the engine and you can hear the pump running. Haven't tested the old one yet, guess I'm a bit reluctant to find out it works after all this.
