Most likely the adaptive headlight system has a failed motor in one of the headlights.

Firstly check the fuses there should be a left and right .

If fuses are ok you'll need to determine which headlight has the faulty motor so have someone switch the vehicle on and see upon initial start up which headlight is moving right to left before settling.

Sorry to hijack a little bit my headlights seem a little low but upon start up they do move side to side - are they supposed to move up and down too? Can they be manually adjusted up?
I did scan them with the correct Jag diagnostic software and no errors came up.

The self-test is on the horizontal plane only.

The basic setting, like any headlight unit is done by a couple of screws on the top face of the light. Open the bonnet and you can't miss them.

Before you purchase anything, slap the headlights three or four times, very forcefully, then lock your car, unlock your car and start it again. It may take a couple of attempts of the same sequence, but it does work in most cases. It happens on my 2010 XKR, sometimes with the flashing dash warning but most often without it. And I'll know it's happening by the fact that the lights are pointing toward the ground and I can barely see straight ahead. Again, I hit each side with the back of my fist, and then lock the car to reset electronics. Sometimes, I'll go a year or two without it happening, other times it might happen once in six months.

A commonly reported problem/fix is to make sure that the earth points in the front wheel arches are sound. They have a habit of corroding loose.
