Welcome to the forum Mike,

(I've moved your tech question from General Tech Help section to the XK/XKR section for viewing by more members with the same model.)

Doing a 'hard reset' by disconnecting the battery is just clearing the underlying fault code which is then resetting on the next shift. The guys here should be able to advise how to troubleshoot the issue.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice on posting to the forum.

Tranny problems can be expensive...don't try and drive it. My advice would be to have it transported (flatbed) to a dealer or your trusted mechanic and have them resolve your problem.

It may be a simple issue now that may be aggravated by driving it.

What's the best reasonably priced code reader.

Off the shelf products will range from $30 to $70,

I run a bluetooth dongle on my OBD2 port (fleabay $20) and the Torque app ($5) on my phone and tablet. Works fine for basic data viewing, code reading and code resets.

Never had a trans fault, so it may require a different route.

I just ordered a Mongoose clone for $80, which I hope will have far deeper reaching capabilities (minor ECU programming capabilities).

What is a Mongoose clone? What are it's capabilities? Where do you get one?

Do you have a check engine light or transmission failure, restricted performance or failsafe lights? If not put the shifter into “4” and see if it shifts on its own. Yes it will start in first and shift to 4th without moving the shifter from “4”

See this thread
Search will give you much deeper grasp.
Basically it gives you more direct access to your ECU. Not for the timid as I'm sure you can brick your cars ECU if you do not know what you are doing. Some of the more basic functions should be to Enable/Disable DRL (and other European functions), program new key fobs and much more.

Before you spend a lot of money on a scanner go to a local garage or AutoZone, Sears or wherever and get them to read the code and get the code not what they think it means and post it. FYI I use a $29.99 OBD reader for my everyday use, it does have its limitations but has given me what I need when I need it. The code is important so write it down and tell us and we can give you the real meaning.

None. Scans and says no link. Won't crank either. Or pop trunk lid.

Could have been going dead. Live in nc. Has a few 20 degree nights recently. Could have got it. Trunks locket. Is there annual entry to the trunk. If it were getting low could it have caused the initial gearbox fault.

If you read more about the XKR on this forum you will notice a pattern. Pretty much every problem related to this car is because of the battery. Dead or low battery in this car can cause all sorts of gremlins, from frozen intro screen, check engine lights galore, and probably not starting the car... Start there. You have to put the car in "acc" when running your scanner to give it power btw.

You need to get good power to the car and a scanner that will read the car. Put her on a charger for a while and try again. You may need to try a different model scanner. (There is a whole thread dedicated to them here on the site).

The codes themselves gives us something to open service manuals and hunt for possible fixes.
With ASC, Fail Safe and Gearbox errors it should be easier to pinpoint the one item in common with all systems, but still too vague to have you go spending big cash on "maybe" parts.

Any ideas on getting into the trunk to replace the battery with a dead battery.
