Default Setting front suspension height on XK150

Just finishing off the first major piece of work in the 22 years I've owned the 150. As this involved an engine out, we've done a few additional bits of work including rebuilding the steering and front suspension. So I need to reset the ride height. I've tried without any success to follow the procedure in the manual. On other cars, I've set to a distance from the underside edge of each guard to the road. Currently on the 150 those measurements are 69 and 70cm at the rear and 68cm both sides at the front. How does this compare with other cars? Or does anyone have a simpler method that doesn't involved two 100lb weights!
