Cool What tool for puling the steering wheel on a 140?

Hello, long time owner, here, almost 40 years, now with an XK140MC OTS, and finally taking the steering wheel off to replace the rusty chrome column cover and try to break loose the big adjustment nut, but I can't get the steering wheel free of its splines. Nut and washer are off, I've squirted Liquid Wrench over three days, rubber malleted it a bunch, but no movement. When I look up steering wheel pullers, they do not seem suited to the 140's steering wheel hub as the legs have to wrap way around to the small ring in back or it could damage the back of the hub. I can probably make a back piece to an existing puller that would work, but that means a bunch of work to make something that might already exist. Does anyone have any advice on what puller will work? Thanks in advance for any help!

Bill you can free the adjustment nut with a large pair of channel locks but using a protective sleeve. Once you can move the wheel in and out you can use the force of pulling it out as a sort of impeller. It will come loose but adjustment nut first!

That's a good thought, but the splines are so tight I can't really pull the steering wheel out quickly, so can't build up any momentum, alas. Also, having hammered at it relentlessly with the rubber mallet, I don't think it is going to come off without mechanical assistance. If no one has a solution, I'll make a brace for the back and connect the puller to it, but I'm not that set up for metal work, so it'll be a pain in the neck. As far as using channel locks to loosen the big knurled nut, I tried that years ago without any luck. I'll soak the whole thing in Liquid Wrench, buy a bigger set of channel locks at try again, though! Thanks for your input, much appreciated!
Bill

Bill can you get a bearing splitter behind the wheel and then use your puller?
