Default XK140 Overdrive

Hello Everybody,
Well, the overdrive on my gearbox isn't working. I've just purchased my Jag, and knew the overdrive wasn't working before I bought it. The light inside the switch on the dash comes on, and I've confirmed the solenoid is functioning. But still no overdrive.

I know my car was sitting most of the last 2 years. I've spoken to the mechanic who worked on it for the guy I bought it from, and he said the overdrive was working about 2 years ago, but not for the last 6 months or so.

Anyone have any ideas I can try, short of pulling the engine and drivetrain?
Also, if it comes to an overhaul of the overdrive, anyone have a recommendation as to who can do that?

Thanks.
Borron

Hi. Currently looking at an XK140 to buy with the same overdrive problem and wondering if you ever received some good advice about this and what the problem was? Thanks so much.

Hi Dennis,

I never did get the overdrive working, so, I pulled the engine, along with the transmission and overdrive, since that is the only way to get the overdrive out of the car. I then sent the overdrive to XKs Unlimited who had it overhauled for me. They told me that my overdrive was just worn out from years of use. Wish I had a better or easier answer for you. Good luck!

Best,
Borron

Borron, thank you so much for this response. Can you advise just roughly what something like this ran?

Hi Dennis,
The cost to me for the rebuild was $1,200 and I bought the cam (CO-5982) on top of that. This was a few years ago, so, I suggest if you're considering this alternative that you reach out to Don Green at XKs Unlimited for more current information. Good luck!!
Best,
Borron

Borron, thank you so much for this information, it's really helpful. OD currently being checked out to determine the problem, and doesn't seem to be electrical, so might be faced with mechanical and this gives me an idea of potential cost. Greatly appreciated.

Best,

Dennis
