I have 2 separate questions.

1. Does anyone have recommendations on replacement headlight bulbs that will give me a more blueish/xenon projection?

2. I noticed what appear to be 2 lights inside the trunk. However, I cannot get them to turn on after trying an array of light switch/ignition configurations. When/how do these lights come on and what's the replacement bulb info in case mine are burnt out?

 

Can't help on question 1 but for the trunk lights I had the same problem. I initially thought it was the large plunger on the trunk lid that turned the lights on and off but after taking it apart it's purely a mechanical piece that pops the trunk open a bit when the latch is released. There's a microswitch in the latch on the trunk lip that you will probably need to replace.

You probably have halogen projector lamps. The projectors will easily, and safely (plus road legal) accept aftermarket HID lamps systems for less than $75. You have to put a ballast in line with your existing wiring, mount it out of the way, plug in the new bulb and insert it into your existing housing. Can't be simpler!

There are many options available, and if you do...stick with 5000-6000k color, if you check out my HID poll in the Exterior section of the forum, you'll see why its recommended by me, and one of the most popular color HID bulbs in the poll.

Whatever you do, don't change the bulbs to those artsy bluish colored 'xenon' claiming bulbs. They blow and you will be totally unhappy in the end.

BTW, putting your model year, XK or XKR, and vert/coupe info into your sig will save many a question about your car's details each time you ask a question. Some may not even reply if you don't give the information in your original post. Just a tip for ya.

 

I have the same issues. Trunk lights do not come on. Replaced bulbs but no affect. They come on every once in a while. Does this microswitch in the trunk invole removal of anything?

 

If you don't want to go with the HID route, you can get the Sylvania SilverStar Ultras that give much better lighting.

 

You need to pull off the plastic cover on the trunk lip - its about 2 feet long and 2 inches wide, has the hole in it in the center where the trunk latch is. Its held on by spring clips that push into holes in the trunk - you just pull it off. Once you have that off the rest should be obvious.

 

That is exactly what it is causing the problem. Manipulation of the switch in and out does not make it work consistently so I need to replace it. However I can't find a listing for part # LNC6242AB any where.

My trunk lights don't work either, however, I think im going to install a mercury tilt switch, because it has no internal parts to wear out like the mechanical electrical stock switch.

 

It is certainly possible, but to get enough movement to activate a mercury switch I assume you will have to relocate it to the trunk lid.

This means running additional wires to the lid. It also means that it will only trigger when the trunk is nearly fully open and not when it is just unlatched, so you will no longer get an accurate trunk unlatched indication. (The same switch operates the light and the trunk unlatched indication).

 

I had a trunk light issue, went to change bulbs and they weren't even plugged in! I had to pull away the liner from the trunk lid and gained access to the wiring.

EDIT!!

I'm getting old! I did have an issue with bulb wiring under the trunk lid liner BUT it was for the licence plate bulbs. Just figured this out while vaccuuming the trunk out.
Hope I didn't cause any confusion.

 

That's what I did as well. It does give a slight bluish color compared to the regular bulbs. Looks good and much brighter.

 

There's a trunk light?? I'm having headlight problems in my "new to me" 99 XK8. every time I turn the right turn signal the headlights go out ??
