Default restricted performance issue

hi newly registered to the forum but have glanced at it for a few years on and off. i have a 2002 xkr convertible i bought 3 or 4 years ago currently has 60k miles and until the last several weeks it has been pretty trouble free.
recenlty i had to have the front struts replaced (leakers) and for some reason now i have a restricted performance light/message on and in neutral engine running the car will not go above 3000 rpms and surging.
in town it seems to run out ok but don't really have a local road i can get above 3000 rpms on.
i have cleaned the mafs, throttle body and load breather, and checked for vacuum leaks (none apparent) and it still has the same message.
my jaguar dealer recomeds replacing the mafs for about $900 any one else have any better ideas or something i may have missed. if it is the mafs i can order a reman and replace it myself. just thought i would see if there is something else i missed before i spend the $$$.
thanks

Please go to a chain autoparts store or buy an inexpensive OBDII reader and get the fault codes. That will really help narrow things down.

Is your check engine (amber light) on?

Seems very odd to have restricted performance and no codes, unless maybe it is a transmission problem that that a generic OBDII reader cannot read.

If you think your dealer is not just shooting in the dark and actually diagnosed the car, a new MAFS lists for $227.00 (part number LNE1620BB) and around $184.00 at online dealers like Gaudin. It is an easy DIY.

BTW it is normal behavior for the supercharged cars to be limited to 3000 RPM in Park and Neutral and sound like they are sputtering when they reach that limit.

also, refurbished MAFs are a tad over $100, not bad at all.

Restricted performance WILL have a code stored, I had one and the 'LEAN one bank' accompanied it. Try the free scan at the auto parts store...just for grins?

Remember, the Rs will not allow an idle above 3000 when in park or neutral..its for safety so you don't damage the engine or S/C

The surging sounds like air/fuel mixture confusion. You've more than likely got one, maybe two or more small leaks that are now in combination, causing issues. Lots of lines to inspect, their o-ring counterpart on the fitting, going to and from the manifold to the throttle body. Keep looking...and did you actually remove the air pipe and put a flash light inside it while looking at it inside a closet...ok, a dark room will work.

re: engine light the one that looks like an engine is not on. just the message and in neutral/park at just shy of the 3000 rpm area is about were the engine starts to sputter and surge. if that is normal in park i wonder why the dealer says the mafs is bad (when i cleaned it it wasn't very dirty looking and the throttle body was pretty clean also). any other ideas?

h20boy
checked the plastic air intake hose/tubing over pretty well when i had it apart if i didn't know the car was 9 years old i would think under the hood looked 2-3 years old at the most. everything looks pretty clean and tight and very little wear. just the restricted performance light on in the message area. the dealer is about 200 miles away so it's not a quick trip to get there. exact verbage from the jag dealer was
"replace vacuum o ring and mass air flow sensor and recheck fuel trims (induction o ring leaking, mass air flow sensor reading incorrectly under load" but the recommended service report dosn't show any fault codes etc...just an $800 price tag.

The 3000 RPM behavior is not your problem...trust us on this.

I agree with h2Oboy, you would not have restricted performance unless there are codes set...your reader probably cannot recognize them.

Try a code reset from your reader anyway.

If that does not resolve it, try a hard reset on your ECU. Turn your ignition on, but do not start the car. Remove the negative battery cable from the battery and touch it to the postive battery cable for a few seconds. Then reoconnect the battery.

If that does not resolve it, try a free code read at Autozone or equivalent.

If that does not turn up anything, pay the dealer for a diagnostic scan and get a copy of the report before you pay for any repairs. The dealer's equipment can read codes that most generic equipment cannot.

Also, if your code reader is capable, look at the long term fuel trims. If you have reading over +/-10% it may very well be your MAFS....but this would normally trigger codes.

had it on my watch list but it looked pretty rough and the 20 day warranty didn't sound very good.

This sounds familiar. I had the same problem with no codes being thrown. Check fuse # 12 (15A) in the engine management fuse box located in the firewall side of the engine compartment on the passenger side. This fuse protects the intercooler pump which is located under and adjacent to the air filter box.Worth a try.

well was able to get the restricted message to go away. just have to wait and see if it returns. still considering installing a new/reman mafs and new rubber seals on it and the top of the egr though. just in case.

slurpee
did take a look at Rockauto but didn't find anything listed by p/n or name. i guess the best deal so far seems to be autozone.
still never did find any codes and i did check the other recomendations. if it pops back up again maybe then it will throw a code or two.
think i am also going to order a new more expensive reader maybe the couple i tried where to generic.
thanks to everone for all the help.

This thread was like reading a murder mystery. But on the last page the author says "the detective solved the case" but doesn't tell who did it.

Griff,
Did you check the I/C pump circuit?

Mike, I don't recall what issues the supercharger coolant pump causes when that fuse is blown (I remember an immediate shorting on startup though). Can you regurgitate a summary for me?
