Default 01 XK8 Premium Audio head unit update questions

Hello all, as always thanks in advance for the help with this!

My 01 Coupe audio head unit has decided that that it no longer likes to play well with others. The volume knob has failed at very, very loud and the tape deck isn't taking the adapter anymore. This is pushed me to expedite a change. The current "fix me" budget will stretch to the head unit that I want but not a complete system swap. As the car has the factory premium system with the sub in the package shelf and the amp, I am not as pressed to try and completely gut it anyway.

My issue is locating a harness adapter that will feed the current system without bypassing the amp and having to wire in new pieces. Also as the car is original now, I would prefer to not hack up the harness. The older stickies and several of the previous threads on this subject mention parts that look to work but no longer seem to be available. I have found some through the Googles that don't seem to work with the amp in the trunk (discount car audio, InCartech as examples)

Does anyone have a current source for these pieces? Is there a solution that I am not seeing?

One other note, the car is equipped with Nav but I plan on eliminating it. I don't believe that it changes anything but please correct if I am mistaken.

thanks all!!

Your simplest solution is to buy a second hand original Jaguar head unit and replace like with (a working) like. The Alpine amp in the boot will only work with a Jaguar head unit, so if you want to go with an aftermarket head unit, you will have to rewire the speakers. Everything is shown in the wiring diagram, so any competent installer should be able to do this.

Dibbit, thanks for the reply and info about the amp. I was hoping that the optical loop was just data and not power signalling for the amp to cycle on/off.

If that is the case and I decide not to replace the head unit with a like Alpine I suppose my next step is to drop the Alpine amp out of the loop, wire in a new one at the same location send signal back out the harness?

Alpine's Ai-NET has the left and right stereo connections, plus a few more wires for the data bus, power, accessory etc - its all copper, no optical cables. The amp switches between the inputs from the CD player and the headunit. All the speaker wires are at the amp, so you can re-use those. My setup is all OEM, but with a bluetooth receiver spliced into the AI-NET cable that goes between the CD player and the amp.

You should look at using the Ai-NET cable to route the stereo outputs from your new head unit to a new amp in the boot, and use one of the Ai-NET connections as the amp on/off signal. The only thing you would be missing from that is a rear left/right audio connection - but again you might be able to re-purpose two of the Ai-NET wires for that.

Your other alternative is to ditch the amp entirely and run new speaker cables from the head unit.

Dibbit, thanks for the additional information! I was mistaken about the Ai-Net cabling and that is good to know. Sourcing the feeds back to the amp through copper is certainly easier. I will let you know how I get on.

Default Wiring the new head unit

hi everyone, hoping you can bail me out again. I have started to install my new head unit and I am running into some questions. Please note the drawing below:
  • If I am reading the diagram correctly, White is switched 12v from the ignition and this would be my primary power feed?
  • NR (brown red) is the direct 12v from the battery and would be the memory feed to the headunit?
  • What would the second NR direct feed be for? I assume just cap it off?
  • Blue out of the head unit into GB (green black) is to signal the antenna up or down, correct.
Thanks in advance for the help!!

Those numbers in squares you have arrowed are referenced at the bottom of that page of the wiring diagram - you can then turn to that page and see where those wires go. In this case 43 and 44 are shown on Figure 01.2. Once you have worked out what you think they are connected to (and the fuse is big enough for your needs), use a multimeter to verify you are correct before wiring it up. Anything you don't need just wrap it in electrical tape.
