06 XK - Changed Steering Wheel - Now Cruise Error Message
Hi Guys,
I have an 06 XK Victory edition which has the full leather wrapped steering wheel. The leather on the top 1/2 of the wheel disintegrated. I got lucky and found a brand new leather wrapped wheel in the right color on ebay. The wheel was listed as being for a 2000-2003. I did some research before pushing and the only thing I could find different between the different years of the steering wheels were the color codes.
I read the online info. And swapped steering wheels in less than 10 mins without blowing the Airbag up in my face. Radio buttons work, horn works....
As soon as I restarted the car after running for about 20sec the 'Cruise Not Available' message popped up. I shut the car down. Restarted and no message. Hour later we take the car to Dinner - message is back and now 3 days later the message is there whenever I drive. And tonight when I had the dogs in the car they hit the ASL button and the display says LIMITER not available.
I pulled out my code reader and there were no codes. I drove with the code reader in all day today and not a single code.
I read some threads where people mentioned the brake pedal switch. 8 months ago I had the message about the Cruise Not Available and Check Taillights. I ordered a new brake pedal switch. But the message appeared 3x in 3 days and then I haven't seen it in the past 8 months -- So never changed the brake pedal switch.
Is there anything I needed to reset fter having the battery disconnected and discharging the electrical system?
On a different note I need to replace the front shock tower mounts. I was going to do shocks at the same time.
I see 2 different models of Bilstein's B6 and B4, and a ProComp... Which one is the best choice?
Also when doing the mounts and shocks - What other bushings should I change? Car has 115k miles.
Thanks
Dave B

I experienced this problem when I changed the Steering wheel on my x-type from a leather to a wooden wheel. The problem for me was the cruise control buttons on the new wheel.
I removed the controls and swapped them for the ones on the old wheel. Everything was good after that.
You should download the electrical guides and check the wiring for the cruise buttons. You will probably find there was some changes. The plugs will plug together but don't go to to same destinations.

I am still trying to find a solution for this issue. I can't find a part number for the steering wheel switches for the 2005/2006. I find the part number going up to 2003. But when I think found the part number C2C17363/C2C17364 - When I search that I end up with a totally different Cruise switch from a different model Jag.
The part number for the 2006 steering wheel is HJG9181. The steering wheel I purchased was a HJB9181BB.
Is it possible that between these two part numbers the switch resistance changed? There are some posts of a couple people finding that on the XJ model one year they changed the resistance value of the switches and the ECU needed reprogramming.
It seems strange to me that after 8 years of producing the XK in the final 2 years they would change something as simple as a steering wheel switch.
The new steering wheel I got was immaculate and "new" what is the possibility that the cruise switch on it happens to be bad and I can pick up any old jag steering wheel switches off of Ebay and resolve the problem?
Thanks for your thoughts and experiences.

You need to determine if this is incompatability or a coincidental fault.
There was a Steering Wheel change on the 4.2 litre model at VIN A34218 with different P/N's for both Adaptive Speed Control and non-ASC as well as the trim options.
