Default Mystery ZF Gearbox Fault but No Fault Code generated after Oil Filter Change

Hi Everyone,

I have a Jaguar S Type V6 Sport 3.0 2005 and recently decided to do an oil transmission and filter change. My car has 110,000 miles on the clock so I figured it was overdue .
I followed the instructions posted on your S Type How to Guides for the "ZF Transmission oil and sleeve change writeup" to the letter and all went ok without any problem I refilled it with ZF Lifeguard 6 - filled it with 6 litres observed the temperature and capped it off at 40 deg C...

However that was 2 weeks ago and all was well for the first week no problems at all and after 200 miles driving .

Recently however after starting the car from cold the car drives fine all gearchanges ok but after around 10 minutes the car suddenly starts experiencing lurch type issues only when moving from 1st to 2nd gear. The revs increase but the car does not move then it suddenly lurches forward.
After a few further stop starts from 1st to 2nd gear I finally get a gearbox fault message on my dashboard and I only have 1st gear available to me?

I then have to stop the car switch the engine off and restart the engine. The warning message on the dashboard then disappears and I can then drive the car again as normal for a few miles before the fault reappears and I have to repeat the above steps again.

When I get home I plug my scanner tool into the car but to my surprise it does not generate any error code? (The tool does work fine as I have run diagnostics on the car recently so therefore I find it strange that no faults were detected by the diagnostic tool and yet I get the gearbox fault message on the dashboard )

The problem only occurs in the 1st-2nd gear range and all other gears change perfectly with no problems at all and no lurches in any other gear range.

It is very frustrating as the car is almost undriveable with this problem and so I am hoping very much someone may know of what could be causing this problem and I truly hope it is nothing serious.

Many Thanks in advance for your assistance

Most DIY scanners cannot and do not read transmission or chassis fault codes.

I would suggest RECHECK THE FLUID LEVEL.

You might even 'cap it off' at 30 degrees instead of 40?????

Gearbox DTCs will usually be.....
P16xx or P06xx for control module
P17xx or P07xx for speed sensors

Just as a test put your shifter in the manual position #5 and drive the car it will start in first and will shift up to 5th gear by its self. See if it shifts normally.

I gave it a go but unfortunately had the same problem as before.

Ok! At times a shifter cable adjustment causes a no upshift and I would say you eliminated that possibility. Let us know what you come up with.
