Default 1997 xk8 center vent Dial in center function

Hello,
I have a 1997 xk8 which has a control dial in the center vent facia (pic below) and I wondered how it controls the temperature?

It controls the flow between the facia outlets and the footwell. It's probably best to leave it at the center.

Ok, I thought I was going crazy since I am very observant and I don't remember having this on my car. Since I'm at work and the car is still hibernating, I pulled up a picture of my dash and this knob is not present. It must have changed at some point (I'm guessing '99-'00)
