Default 1997 XK8 secondary tensioner replacement

Dear Members,
After a little advice please. car running fine on 113,000miles. Decided to replace upper tensioners useing the zip tie method. checked cam flats for any chain stretch and timming perfect. set up cam with all valves closed and removed cam with no tension on it at all.
however, removed old tensioner with shoe missing and large split in it and went to insert new tensioner and have noticed oil feed holes are different locations.
the old tensioner has offset oil feed holes, whereas the new metal tensioners have oil feed holes in the centre. is this normal for the replacement tensioners or is it possible the tensioners are wrong.
Not sure where the slipper has gone, looked for days and it has simply vanished. suspect it is in sump.
In an ideal world id have done a full tensioner job. can anyone advise on these oil feed holes please?
many thanks
steve

Hard to tell from the photos. Tell us the part numbers of your new tensioners, and where you bought them. That will help us know if you've got the right parts. Also be advised that;

1. There is a left bank tensioner and a right bank tensioner, and they are NOT interchangeable. Make sure you've got them oriented correctly.

2. With the new tensioners, you will also need slightly shorter bolts for installation. This is very important. You may have known this already, but just in case...

Your missing plastic bits from the tensioners are likely in the sump. My advice is to go and get them. I changed the tensioners on my 1997 last summer, and was horrified at the amount of plastic in the sump and oil pick-up pipe screen. You can read about it here - A BOMB, DEFUSED.

hi,
the tensioners were purchased on ebay part numbers C2A 1511 & C2A 1512 suitable for XJ8 & XK8 4ltr & 4.2ltr models as genuin parts. The tensioners are marked LB and RB. LB 17091115 and RB 10091113 numbers on them.

the oil feed holes are definantly in the middle, whereas the originals are offset. Not sure how to check them to see if they are correct. the numbers stamped on them is not the same as the part numbers they were sold as.

shocked how many pieces you found in your sump from the broken tensioners. better check my sump.

thanks for the reply

steven

Those are the proper Jaguar part numbers, but it's impossible to tell whether that's what was actually shipped to you.

I purchased my tensioners through Ford - the same parts were used in a Lincoln LS engine at the time- and many Jag forum members have installed them successfully. It is the identical part at a lower cost. Those part numbers through Ford are:

2W9Z-6K254-BA Right Bank Secondary Tensioner (1 required)
2W9Z-6K254-CA Left Bank Secondary Tensioner (1 required)

W500301S300 Tensioner Bolt (4 required) * AGAIN, MUST HAVE *

Perhaps you can get your hands on another set, from another vendor, and compare them.

Hi,
Ive looked at the images of the tensioners you fitted and they look exactly the same. Does anyone else that has replaced secondary tensioners remember if the oilways on the new tensioners are central compared to the older tensioners?. any help appreciated.

thanks

I think that the Center/Offset Hole position has enough Overlap to permit Oil Flow to the Tensioner.

Hi,
yes thats what I thought, but id kick myself if I got this wrong. no oil, slack tensioners, and smash, Could end up being the first person to kill an engine with brand new tensioners.
all the images Ive looked at seam to show the tensioner with the oil way in the middle of the two mounting holes. but the oil way is offset. Im going to a dealer to compare the ones ive got with others. to big A RISK to get it wrong.

thanks for the replies.

steve
