Default 1999 XK8 coupe.... irratic idle

hi all,

got a problem with my 1999 XK8 coupe. the engine idles as smooth as it should when in 'park' or 'neutral', but put it into 'drive' (with your foot still on the brake) and it starts to misfire. cant work it out, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

took it over to workshop for codes, but none found. someone suggested spark plug coils, not sure myself, should'nt it mis-fire all the time if it was one of the coils?

I am have that same problem with my 1993 XJ6. My engine light is on reading O2 sensor. FF44. I have 72000 on mine and the O2 sensor is factory. I put new plugs and wires on, and cap and rotor. Also a new air filter and flushed the fuel system out. And it is still doing it. I think for my vehicle it is the O2 sensor causing this as the Idle air valve is getting false reading or no readings at all, and is not knowing with to do. Mine will not die out in idle and in drive, but it will start spitting and sputtering. I level it out with my foot on the gas while my foot is on the brake to keep it at 800 rpms. I plan on changing my O2 sensor in a month due to there $270. Wish I knew where there was a cheaper place to get them with out having to splice wires together. So I hope this helps steer you in the right direction.

Very weird, may be worth the time and evaluation fees from a dealer, especially if you can reproduce the symptoms at will. keep us informed please

hi , and thanks to all for the above replies.

back with the results for the benefit of others users of this forum.

it turned out to be a simple fix but the labour charges hit me hard because it went in to a specialist. it just wanted a set spark plugs! could have done the job myself, but when you dont know, you dont know.
