1999 XK8 coupe.... gearbox problem?
hi all,
looking for some tips or suggestions with a problem.
when you put the car into 'drive', it gives a 'thud' when engaging into drive. this is more prominent when engaging reverse. the 'thud' into gear seems more harsh when the car is cold. when warmed up, it doesnt seem to do this. also, i've recently noticed that when i am on a slope and i need to engage reverse, it seems to hesitate before engaging reverse, and then when it does, its with a hard 'thud'. i've read somewhere before that every so often, you need to put it into 'sport' mode and drive your normal driving so that the gearbox can 'reset' itself. this has worked in the past, but not now.
has anyone experienced this kind of problem?
any help or advise would be welcome
by the way, i have no error codes yet.
thanks
T

what Jacks reffering to is the JURID coupling, the front and back off the driveshaft that is bolted to the trans and the differential. Both of which Ive seen loosen and need to be tightened. But also clunks like that are also from broken/worn bushings, be it shock or suspension pieces in the rear
thanks for the explanation brutal. i'll definately have a look at the joints. i somehow dont think its coming from the suspension, it only jerks into gear when you put it into 'drive' from a standstill, and as i previously said, when you engaging reverse, it seems to hesitate for a split second then jerks into gear (kind of freightning if your trying to do a quick turnaround!)

lol, and you think since I knew it doesnt....actually theyre still widely used, but the part youre referring to Jack is a big rubber donut and called a Jurrid coupling.
