Default 2000 xk8 conv needs transmission repair

Kept getting an engine whine noise brought car to mechanic and diagnostic test said problem inside transmission. Remanufactured trans from jag is $7k. Overhaul of my transmission is $6k. Here is confusing part, mechanic says jag requires all parts of transmission be replaced. In talking with Aamco mechanic he told me overhaul will replace the damaged / non working parts but not all parts. So Aamco cost is possibly less assuming all parts don't need to be replaced...(which he says he has never seen a car where everything needs replacement). Who is correct? Does everything need replacement? Or just the damaged parts? Thanks for any help.

if it has high mileage, and you plan on keeping the car a very long time after the repair, you might as well replace some of the 'wear' parts, like the torque converter, and the hard parts, maybe even the solenoids. I am currently 'saving' for a rebuild myself, on a 6hp26, quoted to me at $4200 from a ZF experienced shop, and that included alot of parts replacement.

The dealer doesn't take any chances on 'repairs' of the transmission, they'll do a swap, or nothing at all. Until you open up the transmission, the extent of the damage is not known...did the fluid run low, causing overheating? Did a drum/gear break sending shrapnel throughout the transmission? If yes, then most parts will be needed.

Thanks! Mileage is really low (66k) so I am going to do the repair, just wasn't sure if I needed the whole transmission or if I could do just the parts that were damaged. Appreciate your time!

Many of the forum members have made negative comments about AAMCO. I have no experience there, do my own repairs, but maybe some members in your area would comment if you requested.

Hey Gator, the responses you've received on the replacement of parts within the transmission are spot on. But I too would suggest going for another opinion on the diagnosis and need for repairs. I don't have any experience, but there have been descriptions of the "A" drum failure on the Xk transmissions (I hope I'm stating the right info here), and the fixes have been based on the replacement of that item. Do a search on this forum, and check out the DIY FAQ thread at the top of this forum for other info.

Good luck, hope to hear you're on the road again soon without the whine!

Steve

I would check around my XK8 transmission was rebuilt for $3400 by a shop called Free Mileage Transmission. They were very good at walking me through what they might have to do and what they actually did. I was quite satisfied with the work. And they replaced what was worn and broken only.

Steve is right, if its just an A-drum failure (common on the ZF 5hp24), and no pieces have torn up anything else, you're only looking at a much lower repair bill (I estimate $1,500). If it is only the A-drum, be sure you replace it with a reinforced unit, a few companies are selling those as an upgraded part, making the failure non-repeatable.

Default 2000 xk8 transmission repair

Recently posted about needing transmission repair on low mileage 2000 xk8 conv, great responses and would like to know the good, bad or ugly about AAMCO in orange county CA area. I have spoken to a shop and seems pretty spot on with info and he has worked on jag transmissions. I also had a transmission repair at a shop years ago and am still driving that car (work done in different state and different car). Thanks in advance
