2000 xk8 key will not unlock car or vert top

Any key will lock the vehicle but only the right key will unlock it.
The key you have must work in the ignition to start the vehicle or you would certainly have mentioned it!
Check if it opens the luggage compartment. If it does then either the door lock has been swapped or there's a fault with the door latch assembly. The microswitches are a known issue.

With no resistance it could be just the lock operating lever (arrowed in blue) come adrift but no resistance to the right only suggests door latch mechanism or microswitch fault.
Unfortunately the door card has to come off to be able to check this.
There's a an excellent video in the HOW TO Videos sticky thread at the top of this tech section showing removal of the door latch:

So this is the synopsis. Pulled the door apart and found the key is not turning the lock cylinder all the way. Took the lock cylinder and handle to lock smith who informed me it is the vallet key and therefore will not unlock the car. Strange because it will unlock the trunk. So his suggestion find a lock cylinder and matching key to replace drivers door lock. So off to Ebay.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Just to be sure, when turning the key to the right, it will turn a bit and act like it hit its max, and do nothing. However, there is very significant resistance at this point, it has not hit it's stop, and will turn even further, even tho it takes more force than one would think is normal, and this is when it actually does something.

It is a black headed key. When turning to the right it stops with little to no resistance but when I had the handle out with tumbler and key in hand the key would hit the stop point. If I pulled on the back of the tumbler the key would continue past the original stop point and give spring resistance. Does this make sense? It is as if the key is stopping half turn before it should in the tumbler.
