Default 2003 XK8

Was wondering if the timing chain tensioners were still plastic on the 2003 model XK8?

No, and the chains were updated.

Thanks for the quick response. What issues are typical with this year and model. It's a coupe and not a convertible so no green shower issues.

Default Dead easy to check

It’s easy to check the important secondary chain tensioners. Just take the cam covers off to look. Only basic tools required. Pics below.

  • Highest priority are the (4) sections of hydraulic lines to the oil cooler. Any one of the rubber sections can separate from the aluminum and dump the engine oil in an instant. A bit pricey, but easy job.
  • Cooling system in general, but octopus and valley hoses need to be checked out. Also do the thermostat assembly (with sensor, pipes) and radiator hoses.
  • Collapsed front upper shock mounts leading to a low ride and excess negative camber. Get the Welsh part.
  • Collapsed front sway bar mounts. Super cheap, a bit tricky to install.
  • Engine air leaks in general, leading to high fuel trims. Do a smoke test to find them all.
  • Fuel pump is $$$ so periodic fuel system cleaner is probably your friend. And do the filter.
  • Wheel bearings and ABS reluctor rings need to be checked as they lead to transmission errors.
Of course, maintenance is important
  • Transmission pan/filter/sleeve/seals and fluid likely need to be done.
Definitely get some sort of OBDII tool. If in doubt, start with a cheap ELM327 and a phone app.

For the record, my car had busted primary tensioners after only ~30,000 miles since the last time they were replaced. And they were the latest third gen parts as well.

My car has had at minimum ( what i know of ), three sets of timing chain tensioners and chains ( two of which are the third gen ), and the transmission rebuilt twice.

Transmission needed rebuilt after ~50k miles, twice.
