Default 2003 XK8 Waterpump removal that easy?

Looking at my service manual PDF it sure looks simple to remove the water pump. Remove belt, then pulley, take out the bolts, put in new o-ring and gasket and put it back on, put on belt and refill coolant. Is it that easy? It says to replace the pulley bolts, is that fact? Do they come with the new pump? It appears I don't have to remove the T stat housing or anything. I still am getting a faint smell of what I think is coolant. I am ganna check and top off coolant a few more times, it it keeps dropping I think it is time to have a shop pressure check things. I am running out of things to replace.

If you have a gasket, not o-ring, you will have to scrape the old gasket and crap off the engine.

The bolts can be used 3 times before they are unusable.

That easy, just did this to my ride, took long because the xkr needs the fan removed to get the blower's belt off and my fans had the wiring harness stuck in them.

It is a pretty easy fix. Messy because you can never get all the coolant out, but not difficult, especially on the 8.

I am not sure why the manual says the bolts are limited use items, the torque isn't that high. Not torque to yield like head bolts for sure.

well today I cleaned off the front of the motor below the WP pulley. I have always had rad fluid smell from the front, there is a ever slight leak coming from behind the WP pulley, got to assume it is done.
On my 03 non super charged xk8 I don't have to remove the tstat housing to replace the pump?

well since they are cheap and the job looks easy I have ordered a new pump. This cooling system is NOT going to beat me. This will leave the radiator the only part not replaced yet.

Easy job. Crack the pulley bolts loose before you remove the belt, then remove the belt, unscrew the pulley bolts, take out the pump bolts, and pull the pump out. No need to remove anything else. Refill the system through the black plastic cap on the tower or risk trapping air, and over heating. The cap may break in the center when you remove it. Probably ought to get a cap first!

Loosen the tower cap with a strap wrench. Using a 10mm Allen is guaranteed to break the plastic.

I can't imagine why they would fit stretch bolts to fix the pulley.

As said above, they apparently can be used three times anyway so I wouldn't angst too much over that one unless you're really fussy, in which case fit new - they can't be that expensive surely? Oh, hang on, it's a Jaguar :0((

Didn't realize you have an '03. Pretty stupid on my part, since you started out with that info! It doesn't have that "tower" we were talking about. '97 to '02 part. Sorry for the confusion.

I assume I do not need a Oring? I have run across stuff where one was on the car but that all you needed was the main metal gasket???

I think I might supply a bit of input on the reason for the change of bolts for the water pump. They are 6 mm fine thread type. They are a bit thin for this application. My trouble began when I stripped the head of one while removing it from the block. I sent my daughter to obtain more, from the store. While I did, I noticed that another bolt had the slightest tweak. I chose to un-tweak it with the vice. When I did it looked great. I started to bolt up the water pump and just to help seal the water pump put a little silicone RTV gasket on the metal gasket. Starting with the tweaked bolt, I started to put the water pump back on the engine. The bolt picked up a bit of RTV on the threads and away I went. Nearing the bottom of the bolt I had the feel that something was wrong. I started to back it out and it snapped off leaving a little nub. I now realize that the cost of $1.00 per bolt (times five bolts) was well worth the piece of mind and the $300 at the mechanic it cost to fix. My daughter never did find the right replacement bolt (kids!), but I was able to at the store. My next mistake was to try to drill it out, which I tried better and better tools, a right angle drill, finally removing the fan housing, which was easier than I thought it would be.

Anyway, the mechanic was a good find, close to the house and not too expensive. Really a good car guy too, we spent a lot of time talking cars. Got the car home it was getting dark, my oldest daughter took me to the mechanic, and I wound up parking behind her. Later, I realized I had forgot to return some movies DVD and asked #2 daughter to take them back. The next day I found a large dent in the Jag fender on the passenger side. The Suburban was a bit scratched up as well. I thought she would use the pickup she normally takes. The night, the low profile, the height of the Suburban, the position of the Jag and the fact that it had been at the mechanic for a few days, without a grand announcement of its return all led to the accident. Darn that kid anyway.

I am starting to really like this Jaguar XK8, it is the only thing in the universe with more bad luck than me! Now to figure out why it has no heat.

If you're concerned about the bolt snapping you can wire brush each bolt and clean the internal threads with a bottoming tap before you reassemble. W/O the tap you can run the bolt into each hole looking for any binding spots.

so the issue is when they are put back in that some are having breakage issues. I don't think I have a tap. Could I run them in slowly and if I feel any hint that they are stopping pull then back out and maybe spray some cleaner in it that would flush the hole out?

I got my pump today, it has the metal impellers instead of the plastic, oh well. Mine came with a paper gasket (what ever you call it) and not a metal one. I thought they came with metal gaskets from the factory??? No O-ring came with it. Hope to install Sun when it is 56 outside.
Have to say I have done and learned how to do more on this car then I had hoped to care too. Ha ha ha ha
