2003 XKR starting issues
Newbie here to the marque and forum~ Just within the past few days, my 2003 XKR has been turning over when I crank it (hot or cold start). Used to fire right up, now seems as if it is taking much longer and almost does not want to. Car has right at 85k miles, and I am thinking Crank Position Sensor, Fuel Filter, battery??? Just not sure. Any suggestions on where to start or common issues? Thanks for any input or thoughts!

It may be your fuel pump check valve. This problem started to occur with the 2003 and on model redesign. See https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...problem-63319/
On your model, you can monitor your fuel pressure with an OBDII reader with real time data capability. This might be a worthwhile investment. There are very inexpensive readers (under $20) on ebay that work with a PC or Android (Bluetooth) phone. Search 'ELM327' on ebay. The Android (Bluetooth) model with an App called 'Torque' is the best of all.
And welcome!

David,
You might want to check Jaguar South 864-244-1555 I believe they're located in Taylors, SC. I've also heard of Watson Import Specialists in Greer, SC I believe they're located off Wade Hampton Blvd. I've not used either of these folks but I believe they were recommended off a post about indy's under the Regional topic Lower Atlantic section ---there should be a sticky at the top "Jag Techs South US" which may list some indy's in the upstate. Good Luck.

Does it run normally after it is started? If it does, it is probably the fuel pump assembly, the check valve is the likely culprit but the whole thing has to be replaced. This is about an $800 part, so research thoroughly. There have been some problems with the replacements as well so do your homework. The plastic anti-drain valves break easily and there have been a lot of failures in the new ones.

Unfortunately there are no Jag. indy's up here in WNC. We have a dealer but I'd rather take it to Greenville for service if ever needed in the future. I do my own maintenance which is a oil change once a year and some repair work which I've only had to replace the intercooler aux. pump---other than that I've not had any problems---knock on my wood dash. I must admit it's fun coming up Saluda grade with a S/C car---just gotta keep an eye out for the NC gendarmes.

My 01' XKR was not starting as quickly as it used to, but it always started up and ran normally. Restarts were quick. I treated the gas with a fuel and oil additive that was primarily light aromatic oil. Not mentioning any brand names. Didn't notice any difference in a month's time. About a week ago I got into some highly spirited driving using up about half a tank of the premium and noticable wear on all 4 tires. Problem has disappeared, for now anyway.
Not positive on this but I think it was cranking up on the #2 fuel pump then it switches to the #1 fuel pump when running. The #2 then only comes on when the SC is working as needed? Does this sound right? The #2 wasn't getting it's fair share of the additive till it got kicked in the butt.

i was just reading about the 4 ltr engines having two pumps, one to start and the the other to run with the starting pump cutting in for higher demand....could be your starter pump is not well...needs a flush as suggested. allan

Thanks for the replys on the slow start! I ran some fuel additative/cleaner through this past fill up, even though the owners manual advises against. No real difference, but plan giving it a little more time and spirited driving. Found a GREAT Indie Mechanic in Upstate SC, Watson Imports (Greer, SC). He says eventually the fuel rail will need to be replaced, but in the meantime, if it does not start, reset ignition a couple of times to allow for rail to "call more fuel up" then it fires right up. Still loving and learning the car and appreciate all the advice!!!!
