Just to be clear I have had my 2004 XK8 for 7 years and with 235,000 km. I do a fluid change every 2 years. Also do it on my high mileage 2008 Stype.
I have got it down to doing it pretty neatly without much spillage but I was wondering if it could be done the way you do it on the X-type.
Everyone seems to be certain that the amount of fluid that ends up being replaced is 7.5 liter's
due to what is left in the pumps torque converter etc.
On an X-type they instruct you to jack the car up 22.5 inches on the passenger side and then fill until it runs out the filler hole.
Could we not do something similar jacking the car up on the right side sill and put in a predetermined amount of fluid after the pan was drained.
I don't have a lift so I get mine up on jack stands and as I said even though I have done it many times I would still not like to fool around with the hot exhaust pipe near the fill hole and the running it trough the gears. and trying to get the plug back in when the fluid warms up.
I more or less just flushed the transmission fluid. I drained the fluid, which was black and made a note of the exact amount of fluid drained. I then used the upper radiator trans cooler hose to refill the transmission with that exact amount of fluid. I drove the car for a few weeks then repeated the process. The fluid was much cleaner but I did it a third time and it seemed to be fine, My car has 115,000 miles on it and shifts fine. It is the ZF five speed. On each drain I would get about 4.5 quarts of fluid.
