Default 97 XK 8 key fob programming problem

I printed a copy of the instructions to program my key fobs and am having no luck. Heres what I did
1 inserted key in ignition but did not turn
2 Held signal in the flash position. (headlights turned on)
3 turned the key to #1 position
4 flashed 4 or 5 times within 3 seconds. Tried many times at different speeds but never got the chime so I could program.
What am I missing. Thanks in advance.

Look for the red light flashing near the P on the transmission, the chime is too quiet to hear.

Thanks so much Landmannnn. That helped. I also think one of my remotes is bad. One will flash the lights and open the trunk but it won't lock or unlock the doors. The other remote has all functions. I am guessing if it wasn't programmed it wouldn't have any functions. I guess off to eBay for a key fob.

It's not that it's too quiet, these security sounders fail regularly due to their location. As mentioned, look at the LED indicator on the gearshift.

The back of the remote buttons are impregnated with a conductive substance. Over time the contacts on the PCB and the buttons get dirty. As you can see the buttons most used are the ones to fail. I repaired mine by taking the remote apart and cleaning the buttons and PCB contacts with denatured alcohol. Works fine now.

I will give that a try since even used remotes on eBay are expensive and you never know what you might get. Thanks for the tip

Can someone explain how the remote switches work. I opened it up to look at it. Don't see anything movable in there. Just the circuit board tracing what what hits it is just the rubber. What am I missing.

Nothing.

Clean the rubber and clean the contact pads(traces) with rubbing alcohol and a tissue.

The rubber is carbon impregnated.

Ok thanks. That's what was confusing. I was looking for metal in there.

I guess you missed the first sentence in my cleaning procedure.
"The back of the remote buttons are impregnated with a conductive substance."

Hlgeorge. Thanks so much. You saved me a lot of money. The next beer is on me. I cleaned it again with rubbing alcohol and it works great. The first time I cleaned it I used something else and I refuse to say what it was. This is such a great forum.
