I might be offered to purchase a 97 XK8 Fast Back Sports Car. 51,000 miles, hasn't been driven in 4 years, engine purrs like a kitten, transmission shifts perfectly, perfect dash, needs headliner, front seats perfect, rear has water damage due to leaking side window seal. I was told the Fast Back Sports Car is different from the regular XK8 Sedan. Does anyone know about this supposed difference ? Any idea as to the value of this car ? Thanks.
As far as I'm aware there is an XK8 Coupe and an XK8 Convertible. The photo is an early coupe with the unfashionable 17 inch wheels.
The most likely serious problem with the car will be rust in the bodywork and subframes depending upon where it has been driven and stored. You will need to check this carefully, ideally with the car on a lift, as serious corrosion problems will be very expensive to put right, and certainly cost a lot more than the car is worth.
Welcome to the forum - as this is your first post, when you get a chance, please stop by the New Member section and post an intro https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...-intro-must-5/ As @RichardS mentioned - there is only the XK8 coupe or convertible - no such thing as a fast back. She looks good but low miles doesn't always mean a great ROI and value is location dependent and rather subjective. Some things to be wary of - just looking at the 1 side view of the car - front end looks a bit low, pop the hood and look for deterioration of the foam around the upper shock mount - if so - upper mount will need replaced. First few years of the XK8's had plastic secondary timing chain tensioners which can break at any time - so that would be the first thing I look at before driving unless service records indicate they have been replaced with 3rd generation secondary tensioners. Sitting for 4 years - rubber bits, seals, gaskets are probably going to leak. I would inspect all suspension bushings, replace battery, drain/replace all fluids/filters, spark plugs, new tires
sitting unused for days or weeks, let alone the years mentioned, is very hard on the fuel pump(s). Expect to change those soon. Not a quick & easy job.
Does it have a clean & transferable title? Check wiring around the engine for rodent damage. Water damage sounds disturbing. Consider removing rear seats & trim to check for mold. Left side of dash in photo #4 looks dirty - hope there's no mold - there's a lot of electrical items behind that end panel. Is there paint / cosmetic damage from sitting under a tree? For values check Craigslist or similar and discount for inevitable work required. Good luck - its best days may be ahead!
I recently bought this car. 60k miles.
Asked $5500. Paid $3500. Needs the front clip repainted. Otherwise in good shape. No rust. Your mileage may vary.
