Default Advice on hose swap

I've been meaning to change the hose that runs from the coolant reservoir all the way through to the thermostat. I bought it about a week ago, but between tests, reports all matter of school stuff, I haven't been able to tackle the situation.

Now, I know it's a simple swap of hoses, but I was wondering. Is it possible to prevent coolant from pouring all over my engine bay when I remove the old hose?

Solved it. I put a rag on the thermostat hose connector immediately after I removed the hose. Lost almost no coolant. None was spat out of the reservoir. (It was a little low.)
