Default Air Cleaner Housings

Hi All,

Basically I am working my way through some issues on the car.
I don't know if I need to Replace the MAF sensor, but mine is the early type with a complete 1 piece unit between the pipe and air cleaner housing top. Just thinking about if I need to replace it....

I see that I can buy a brand new MAF sensor - later type and air cleaner housing for less than the cost of the MAF sensor on my car currently.

So my question is, can I run the later type air cleaner housing top, with the ability to use the later type MAF sensor which is cheaper and a drop in type - also read easier to clean and maintain? Are the two parts interchangeable mechanically? And are the MAF sensors interchangeable?

Thanks for any input.

Matt.

Matt it is difficult to help since we have no idea what you are working on. You should go to the User Control Panel and add your vehicle information to your signature and it will always be there.
If you are changing from the original parts to something new it would be hard to predict what the ECM ( Engine Control Management) would be receiving for information and/or if it could even adapt to it. The sensors provide info to the ECM to control fueling/air/timing etc. Generally how the engine runs.
I am not saying you won't get lucky and it works BUT personally I wouldn't try it.

As pointed out, hard to give good information without knowing year and type of car, an “8” or a “R” model.

note: for the early years at least, the sensor is not the same for XKR vs. the XK8 sensor. The R model is not commonplace and you can’t substitute the less expensive XK8 sensor for it either.

but if you have an XKR, I suggest trying to clean the MAF multiple times before you do anything else. It took 3 cleanings before mine began to lean out the fuel trim numbers to the narrow range of acceptability.

Thanks for the replies. Mine is a '97 XK8 with a one piece MAF sensor, rather than the later type drop in sensor.

Mine is liker the first image, but I am wondering if I can use the one in the second image, with the later airbag of course.

thanks,

Current MAF Sensor

Later (cheaper) MAF Sensor

Short answer is NO. Take a look at your existing and the replacement you are considering. You don't have the extra 2 wires the replacement needs to work.

I know that our earlier mafs are interchangable with a few other manufactures. Look at the sticky section of the xk8 forums. The interchangable parts section.

Hi Matt,
I had a MAF issue with my Audi last year. I bought a replacement from ebay seller justmafs located in New Jersey. It was a perfect fit and haven't had any problems.
I don't know if he has any thing for Jaguar, but it wouldn't hurt to check.
