Default alarm & key fob problems

Just recently I started noticing that my key fob will only do certain things. I can turn the headlights on every time, but lock/unlock and trunk are intermittent. I opened up the remote and cleaned the circuit board with contact cleaner which didn't seem to help. [that headlights work everytime makes me think the remote batteries are fine]

After having pressed the buttons a few too many times on accident I set off the panic mode (or maybe alarm) on accident.

It was a piddly little weak alarm, no Horn. It was extremely quiet.

Anyone know what I should test?

Ok so I wanted to test the battery, Ive got a steady 12.17 volts with car off.

I tripped the alarm again and noticed no horn, I turned the car on and pushed the horn... The horn is not working.

Anyone know of a fuse diagram online?

I found this Tome: http://captainjaguarscathouse.com/El...ec%20Guide.pdf

Still searching it for a novice's directions to the fuse i.d.'s

Ok lots of progress testing. Fuses listed here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...00/#post157643

I checked fuse 11 & 13 (horn) its good. I swapped the r2 (foglamps) and r6 (horn) relays and both work. When seated in car and pressing horn I can hear the relay clicking on.

So I guess its my horn thats broken?

edit I took my handy-dandy 12v dc adapter and tested each horn. no sound (either polarity +/- swapped)
Im assuming horns run on 12v.

Please note, I'm in the UK and we use a different fob frequency from the US. Nevertheless, intermittent button faults will be due to the same issues.

Always change the batteries first before looking for less obvious causes but if you're confident the batteries are OK and have cleaned the fob contacts, it's likely the microswitches are worn.

The fact the headlight button works (the least used function) whilst lock/unlock and trunk are intermittent (the most often used functions) makes worn microswitches a high probability.

I've recently had these replaced on one of my fobs. This is the eBay link to the UK repairer I used:

JAGUAR XJ XJS XJR KEY REMOTE FOB REPAIR FIX SERVICE | eBay

There must be a similar service from US based repairers.....?

Thanks, it now occurs to me that it may not be the key fob circuit board side (which was filthy before cleaning) but the rubber button side which has little conductive dots.

apparently the dots are made of carbon and wear down over time. I think this is a DIY job I can try Saw a few websites that show how to cut the dot off of an old tv remote and silicone glue it in place.

I haven't had to try it but I believe that Radio Shack sell a pen to 'paint' contacts back on. I know they do for circuit board lines.

Before you perform a button transplant, new fobs are only 40-50 bucks and have nice new contacts

Also, your horns will draw a lot of current, a common power adapter may not be able to drive them - your quick test may not be conclusive.

Yes radio shack has a "conductive pen" for 20$. I guess its that expensive cause it has silver in it. I didn't buy it yet, im gonna look around my house for some brass sheet, or aluminum foil tape. A multimeter should confirm if it will work or not.

This is the conductive paint RadioShack sells:

CircuitWriter

This is the one you want, by the same company...

CaiKote

I already applied the first one and am waiting for it to dry, Im gonna be really disappointed if it fails... The CaiKote 44 is a carbon dot replacement which is IDEAL for rubber buttons on key fobs. 11$ online and they ship...
