Default All revs, no G's

So picture this: Lazy Sunday afternoon, coasting through the beautiful Drenthe scenery at 60-70 Km. (40 Mls). Alloffasudden I find myself behind a sooth vomiting Glof Diesel (cabrio!). You can imagine the only option I have is to overtake, and real quick.

So at first opportunity I switch to Sports mode, and 2 seconds later I floor it.
All that really happens than is revs go up to 6000 (ouch!) while gearbox switches from 5th to 3rd (I guess), and even palying with the throttle, no accelleration.

So questions are: Is this a sign of wear in the gearbox, is this just Apollo 13 hard- and software trying to make the best of it, or is there another explanation?

Is there a way around this , other than going Manual?

Thanks for your thoughts in advance!
