Default Alpine Premium Audio

Hi All
I have a 2004 XKR convertible with a base Alpine system.
I have sourced an Alpine premium amp to go on the stack.

Does anybody know what speakers I need to change to, I know that I need to get some tweeters for the dashtop....any help with the parts and/ or part numbers so I can search for them would be invaluable.

Any advice would be helpful so that I may supply a local audio firm with the parts required as I am not technical.
Cheers
Brian

Here's the information from the JTIS Base Audio System The base system audio unit incorporates integral message display and 'Phone Ready' controls for installation of a GSM hands-free telephone system. A CD autochanger is installed in the trunk and six speakers are located two at each side of the facia and one in each door and rear quarter.
Premium Audio System As in the base system, the audio unit incorporates integral message display and 'Phone Ready' controls, and a CD autochanger is installed in the trunk. The premium audio system also includes an amplifier unit installed in the trunk a sub-woofer speaker on the rear parcel shelf (a sub-woofer in each rear quarter on convertible models), two mid-range speakers in each door, a mid-range speaker in each rear quarter and a tweeter at each side of the facia.
Hopes this helps you out

Thanks for your input
Yes, I have 6 speakers, but the two tweeters in the door corners arn't up to much and the two grills on the dash top appear empty.

Like I said, I located a 'premium' amp to sit on the nav unit and CD changer should I wish to purchase it , but am at a loss as to what speakers to replace the current ones with.

I have not heard a 'premium' system to know how much better it is than mine, but I am trying to replicate it by 'mix and match' method lol

Maybe the woofers are better? in premium....just need to find out what they are.

Thank you for your info.
Cheers
Brian

Good day,

I believe you need both pieces of the stereo system as they talk to each other. I had the premium system and found it to be lacking. The two rear speakers are subwoofers.

I have replaced the whole system and speakers with a Pioneer (bluetooth for the phone) cd/mp3/ipod control unit and Infinity speakers in the rear and the doors. I have a 4 ch amp in the boot which drive two small subs and the 4 front speakers.

This is a huge difference in sound quality and ease of use ( using my Ipod and my Phone).

Bit of an install job but satisfyingly fun.

Thank you...food for thought!
I have never heard the 'premium' system, but had a Pioneer setup in my TVR and loved it.
If you were disappointed with the premium, I might be also!
I will do some more research before proceeding
Too bad you are that far away for me to hear what sounds like a fantastic set up.
All the best
Brian

I'm surprised, I thought I read all xkr's of your MY had the premium audio as standard.

Premium Audio has been standard on all U.S. XKRs. and all U.S. XK8s since 2000

Note: MY 2000 U.S. XKRs had Nav as an option.

From the U.S. 2001 Brochure:

Here's the relevant section from the Parts Manual for the Alpine Premium Sound System in the 4.2 Convertible:

Alpine Premium Audio-alpine-premium.jpg

Jaguar Part Numbers for the Speakers:

1. Single Cone Speaker 2 1/2" diameter - LJD4140CA
2. Single Cone Speaker 6" diameter - LJD4140BA
5. Tweeter - LJD4145CA (to VIN A40264); C2N2668 (from VIN A40265)

Item 3 (Rear Speaker Assembly) looks very different from the Base System and may cause you some issues.

I thought it was standard also but Doowopfix has a British XKR and I know the European market is different

Alpine premium standard on all US XK8s Paul? I've got a US XK8 with the base audio system, which I want to desperately upgrade, and the six cd changer.

You're Right!!!

The 2000 U.S. Brochure does specify what they call a "Premium Audio System" as Standard on XK8.

But then, they go on to specify the Alpine 320 watt system with 6 CD Auto Changer as Optional.

However, starting in 2001, the Alpine System was indeed Standard on U.S. XK8s.

Sorry for the bad information.

Oh, european spec for the OPs car does explain the difference in what I thought was standard for the xkr. Seems unfair though!

In response to GGG above

Thank you for the trouble you went to to dig out this info Graham.
If I decided to go down this route, item 3 will cause problems inasmuch it is not obvious where this piece of kit is situated....I have 2 woofer speakers in the 1/4 panels behind the front seats....I believe that in the coupe that it uses one central large woofer?
Item 3 definitely looks a more complex piece of kit than the others.
I keep thinking 'is it worth the hassle?' I am no auto electrician and if I can't supply the local audio shop with the kit, I might end up with a mis-matched system

The guy HARE above went down the custom system route, but did it himself which I can't do....I like the idea, but the cost to me may be prohibitive...the jury is out lol
Thanks again
Brian

Looking at the wiring diagram for the standard system (conv) shows 4 speakers in total. I believe that your rear speakers are not subs but reg speakers.
The installation of an aftermarket stereo should be not too bad.
I followed other guides to obtain the stereo fascia adapter and the part number for the older jaguar stereo surround. These come from your side of the pond so that is a bonus for you.

The wiring harness for the standard system can use an adapter ( I believe) if not a multi meter will confirm the memory circuit (constant 12vDC) and the power circuit. You can splice into these. The speakers can be operated off the stereo itself.
I had to run new speakers wires to the boot on account of that was their point of origin from the amplifier.

I would try a new deck with the factory speakers first to see how they sound. To change them is not hard at all. The door speakers are accessed by removing the grille which is held in place with one screw on the bottom of the door. The rears take a bit more work but, once again, nothing too hard.

No car audio place ( here) could help me. I was quoted $1500 just to put the deck in. So I was kinda forced to do the research and dive in. $200 for the stereo (onsale), $400 for the speakers, $150 for the fascia system. Happy I was after the change.

Hope this is of some help.

Default Audio Upgrade

Hi there
Thanks for the info you supplied.
You make it sound so simple lol but you don't know how un-technical I am....for me, you need to be confident that what you start, you can accomplish...I can't and would need the services of an audio tech.
Now if I paid for your flight......lol....nah, not a good idea haha.

Many thanks for your advice, it is appreciated.

PS I believe it is a 6 speaker setup that I have....2 in rear quarters, 2 in doors and 2 in window quarters....I know the premium has 8

Brian,

You're right - the Coupe has one large central woofer. Not an option on the Convertible.

If you don't want to follow Hare's route of designing / sourcing / fitting replacement aftermarket components to get a better system, you could source all the remaining Alpine Premium parts from one of the specialist Jaguar breakers. This would ensure compatibility and probably save you a good bit of cash.

GGG....Graham, returning to this subject, thanks for this info, it will prove invaluable when I get round to upgrading my system.
Some questions, if I may, please.
Item 3...is there a part number quoted? do you assume it is situated on each side ?
In the quarter panels there are currently 2 speakers, presumably just bass speakers...would you think that items 3 might be a combined unit for bass AND subs as you need both as subs are specific(I believe)?
As there are 8 speakers in the vert 'premium'...perhaps, item 3 is two units ...the doors and the dash top...per side would give the 8...would you agree with my thinking?
Thank you for all your help and advice.
Brian

Brian,

Here's the Part Numbers for Item 3:

Alpine Premium Audio-hk-speaker-convertible.jpg

Note it's further complicated by a P/N change at VIN A40264. Although the enclosures are clearly Left and Right handed, the speakers on either side should be identical.

Here is the layout diagram with a little more information on the speakers:

Alpine Premium Audio-hk-speaker-location-convertible.jpg

This is the JTIS procedure for removal and refitting the rear quarter speakers:

JTIS - Quarter Panel Speaker - Convertible.pdf

JTIS elsewhere describes the Premium system as having 'a sub-woofer in each rear quarter on convertible models'.

Graham, thank you for this further info
I will try and get the parts from a Jaguar breakers, then pass them with your info to a local car audio centre...hopefully, I will be able to accomplish the desired upgrade.
I know you have a coupe with a central woofer..have you experienced the premium in a vert or had feedback about it?
Many thanks
Brian

Default Aftermarket

I had both an XK8 and an XKR upgraded. Realize that the Alpine has an optical link between the head unit and the amp (so I couldn't retain the amp). I went single DIN with a power up screen for the XK8 and double DIN for the XKR (had to relocate the second row of switches (heated seats etc.) into the glove box (which is a little annoying). The single DIN motorized screen required the car to be I drive to motor in and out and covered all the switches when deployed (a lot more annoying which is why I went double DIN the second time). On the XK8 went Pioneer matched set for the in door tweeter and mid-range, Kicker subs in the back (both were roadsters), for the XKR went Nexus speakers in the front (relocated the tweeters in the dash) and earthquake subs in the back. Used a Nexus amp in the XKR, don't recall what amp I used in the XK8. In both cases got upgraded navigation and satellite radio (and iPod/USB support). Swapped out the XKR nav for gauges. The biggest improvement in both cases was the subs, the Jag units are crap. In the XK8 I also tried a huge 12" sub in the trunk, wasn't worth the trouble (gas tank damps the sound). Here are some pictures.
