some things are timeless.

Yes it is a Mazda derivative with Fiat styling enhancements and some differences in powertrain and accessory pkgs. The Mazda version according to the most current performance assessments I've read is marginally quicker but somewhat less...what, endearing? comfortable? appealing? Who the hell knows as those are generally the opinions of the writer anyway. I do know that the original 124 Spiders back in the late 60's were a technically greater care saddled with pretty sorry Italian attention to what makes a vehicle reliable. I drove a few and loved them for their looks and handling but those were the days of GTO's, 442's, Hemi's, etc. and who in their right mind wanted a 1.8 or 2.0 4 banger<G>

It is interesting that to a large degree the British and somewhat lesser the USA develop pioneering technology, art and implementation only to miss the volume business in which the less creative seem to specialize. Creating the car that we appreciate was a massive undertaking by many during a challenging time for the company developing very new technology. What we have is very well made and quite safe and reliable overall. Yes, the Asian manufacturers saved us from the domestic garbage years ago. The question is why was this needed in the first place? The Anglo/American world embraced an export economy for opportunistic and practical reasons after the great wars and also continued a trend of using the empire as a market for its goods. It is no small wonder that the developing Asian world would copy this eventually. What will we come up with next?
