I just finished this fix. I think it's the last little niggle on my "new to me" XK8. Kudos to Mish_Mish for the write up and photos. I took my time and it took me a little over an hour. It's amazing to me that that little crush washer would cause the malfunction - the stopping of the tilt when putting the steering wheel back into position after the tilt away (in auto mode). I'm a happy camper now.

I think I may have identified at least one thing that we all might be doing that could exacerbate the problem. After getting my tilt and reach functions working again, I noticed that I had a habit of leveraging myself out of the cockpit with the steering wheel "while" the auto retract modes were still in motion. This would obviously put an unusual stress on the two systems. Now I'm trying to be a bit more considerate to Kitty

 

Well, a number of us have had success with this other procedure instead:

Initially, I did the cleanup/washer procedure on my own car, and the problem came back after a few days. The root cause is believed to be electrical in nature, so I tried this new fix (now over 6 months ago). I have not had the tilt mechanism fail a single time since then, and my car is a daily driver.

I wish you the best of luck of course, but keep this new procedure in mind in case the washer fix proves to be less than permanent.
