auto up-down steering wheel

auto up-down steering wheel
I have a 2000 XKR with a glitch in the auto up down feature. The wheel always goes up when I remove my key. It almost never goes down when I insert my key. It will go down manually if I use the switch several times. It goes down a teeny bit 3 or 4 times then goes all the to where it is programed. I have noticed if I park the car in the sun and the interior warms up it will go down as designed. Any ideas? Thanks

Lots of issues on the tilt/reach functions. There seems to be several weak engineering designs all coming together to make this a more common problem than it should be.
The internal steering shaft grease appears to slow the operation in cold weather and/or because of lack of use to the point of creating a motor/cable problem.
The position potentiometer fails due to resistance 'spots' on its range of movement. That would appear to be what your problem is.
My problem is apparently that the reach potentiometer failed to note the end of the steering shaft's range of motion and continued to drive the motor until the motor cable failed.
The dealer solution for the tilt function is to replace the tilt motor/potentiometer and for the range function to replace the steering column.
With an electronics background I am fond of a electrical spray for cleaning potentiometers but you have to get there to use it. The tilt function is located on the bottom of the steering column and is easily accessed by removing the bolster under the column. Two bolts at the bottom corners and two plastic 'prongs' at the top corners. You do not want to break off one or both of the 'prongs like I did on the first car.
The 'reach' function is a lot more difficult to access. That's my problem.
May I suggest that you set the seat memory 1/2 to the same position for all functions except the tilt function. Set that to each side of the fail point(s) and then exercise the potentiometer by pressing 1,2,1,2, . . .1,2 until it cleans itself a bit.
I just told you more than I know but the 1/2 exercise did work for me on a previous car.

Exercising the up/down motion has made quite a difference in mine. When I got the car in November it didn't really work at all. If I kept toggling the control it would bump a bit and stop. Gradually it started working better, now it usually raises and lowers with the key. Occasionally it still sticks. I still get nothing on the reach motor.

Hankster,
I had the same prob - exercising the tilt may be a bandaid but I don;t think it will solve the issue. See the thread at:

The replacement motor was $150 or so and was pretty easy to install.
