Default BMW E38 E39 ZF 5HP24 transmission for MY1997 XK8

1st gear on my gearbox has gone.

I'm trying to source for a ZF 5HP24 replacement.

I note that the early series BMW E38 and E39 also used the same box.

My question is do they come in the same housing as the MY1997 Jaguar XK8 and would fit perfectly? Bimmers are certainly much more plentiful around than Jag XK8/XJ8's.

I'm still driving it around, manually shifting and lots of fun...

Thanks a lot in advance.

I found a transmission specialty shop which did a complete overhaul of my ZF 5HP24 for a very reasonable price which is less than the equivalent of US$2,000 and carries a 6-month or 5,000km warranty. The main culprit was the doomed-to-fail-in-time split A-drum.

I still have no idea if a box from a BMW E38 or E39 could be simply swapped in.

No. The bolt pattern, mount are different, and I think the ratios, speed sensors will not conform to the TCU.

I would first check the shifter linkage adjustment to be sure it is correct.
