Default Boot Release

Looking for hints as to how to remove the plastic chrome trim piece so I can work on the electric boot release button....it is not working.
There are three small square openings, on each end, one in middle; is there a clip inside that needs to be released?

Again, appreciate any hints on this.

Thanks,

I don't know what chrome trim you're referring to unless you mean the XK8 where the key inserts. That has nothing to do with the electric release as it is accessed through the trunk (boot if you prefer).

Do you hear the solenoid actuating when you press the key fob or dash buttons? It could be you're stuck in valet mode. Use the master key to lock & unlock the driver's door. Maybe your problem is over. My XKR only came with a valet key it is was a real pain to release it from valet mode. (Does your gas filler door pop open? That wouldn't open in valet mode either, I recall.)

If not, go to Youtube and view

It will detail panel removal to view the lock mechanism for starters. There's a red button that just might be your problem. I'm trying to repair my electric release and that switch WAS in the wrong position but now my problem is the cable end is gone at the solenoid.

If the button is up and the solenoid clicks forward and back, then your problem is likely the cable. Remove the side trim panel on the battery side of the trunk and view the solenoid and cable.

I did a quick search online for a replacement cable and found nothing so I figured I'd check on the forum to see if anyone has a quick remedy. It will be faster for me to go fabricate a clip to mechanically tighten to the cable and cotter pin to the solenoid, so that's what I'm heading to do right now.

Good Luck!

This one?

On the Coupe, once the lid liner is released the chrome trim fixing nuts are visible. I don't expect the Convertible would be any diferent.

Wire harness between the trunk lid and the body can also be an issue. I had a broken wire where the harness flexes for trunk lid movement.

Good post for checking the harness: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-button-74403/

Yes that chrome trim piece. I did pull the boot liner off, found what I thought were the two nuts holding it on...removed them....trim did not budge.

But I was able to isolate the issue as being somewhere in the wiring that is restrained within the boot lid....which I though was a bit odd as there is no movement. Thought for sure the problem would be in the wire section that is clamped to the boot hinge...nope.
I moved the wire harness in the boot lid and at some point it made contact again....so now the button works. Decided not to go any further at this time...I know there is a problem in there somewhere...so when it is a bit cooler in the garage I will go find it....just too hot right now.

Thanks for the replies.

it got hot early this year, all over the west and southwest !!!
I thought I would have another month to work in the garage in moderate comfort.

Mother Nature had other ideas.
