I bought a 1998 Jaguar XK8 and had it delivered. It had keys but by the time I got it the keys were lost. Nearest dealer is 250 miles from me. Other than going to a dealer whats my options. I am ferous at this outfit for loosing them. Whats going to be my cost.

 

With no keys, I can't see you have any option but Jaguar other than sourcing all key, lock and module parts from a breaker.

The car will originally have had:

2 x Black headed Master keys
1 x Green headed Valet key
2 x Remotes (fobs)

Many purchase vehicles with one or more of these missing and want to source replacements. If you have a key and a remote this isn't too difficult. If you have neither, it's almost impossible to avoid going to Jaguar.

Remotes can be purchased on eBay and programmed to the vehicle by the owner BUT you need to know the exact code off the back of a remote to be able to get the right one to match the vehicle. Without any remotes you can't do this.

Keys can be sourced again on eBay either as blanks or cut BUT have to be programmed to the vehicle by a Jaguar Dealer or an Independent with the equivalent of the Jaguar WDS (World Diagnostic System). If you don't have a key, you can't get one cut to match.

The Jaguar Dealer can supply both keys and remotes from the VIN BUT the vehicle is still going to have to go on their hardware to map the key to the vehicle.

I've seen US dealer costs quoted recently on the forum between $80 and $140 for a key. New remotes are rarely discussed as most members have one available and are able to source a used spare.

The delivery service should reimburse you for the cost of the items which they failed to deliver. If they refuse to do so and you have paid with a credit card, call your credit card company and explain the situation to them, and tell them that you want to do a chargeback. You should be well within your rights to do so, which would then refund the entire shipping fee. Once that process begins the shipper will have the choice of dealing with a lot of paperwork to counter the chargeback claim, or else reimburse you for their error as they should have done in the first place.

 

Honestly, I would have refused to accept the car with no keys.
This could cost you BIG time, as well as the aggro of days (or even weeks) with no car.

Local dealer price is $300 a copy retail. Maybe they will take mercy on your soul. They did mine for $200 each. Since they are lost, you will have to have them made from the VIN. Dealer....

I bought a chipped key (blank) and an almost new key fob off eBay for $70.
Put a new battery in the fob and it works great. This might be a good place

Is the XK8 like many other cars where you have to replace the entire security module if all of the keys are lost? I've learned that on my Saab it will cost me $1000 to get a new security module, 2 keys, and all of the labor and programming if I lose the 1 key that came with my car. On my daughter's Prius it would actually cost $1500 to replace everything if all keys are lost. On most cars these days you need at least one working key in order to program a second key. Without that one working key you are SCREWED. I'm not sure if that applies to the XK8, though.

And to add to that... on my Saab the security module has to be coded to the VIN of the car, so you can't just go to a junkyard and transfer the junkyard keys and module to the new car. The dealer can't even reprogram an existing module to the VIN of a different car. The VIN has to be burnt into the memory at the factory. I'm hoping that isn't the case with your Jag, because Jag dealer services are not cheap and I can easily see this costing you thousands of dollars if Jag has the same security features as the other cars I've mentioned. But like I said, I don't know the answer. I'm just trying to scare you and make you worry about stuff that might not be true. That's just what I do. I can be an *** sometimes. Sorry.

Sam, it's been a few years since I worked on SAABs. The older models would cost from $1700-$2300 to renew. The security module (under the driver's seat and extremely prone to water damage) and the ECM required replacement as they challenged and agreed with each other in order to start. Your '06 has a different system and while I can't quite recall the exact info I believe there's a module in the steering column that requires replacement along with the ECM. I'd hazard to guess you'll have a difficult time finding a dealer to get it going for much less than $1500. The keys are ridiculously expensive but much cheaper than the alternative. Also, plan on the ignition switch only lasting 3-4 years on your model.

 

The internet shows Missouri Jag dealers in Jefferson City (75 miles) and the western side of St. Louis (175 miles)

It's not good news, but that's far less than 250 miles.

The transporter owes you big. Sorry about your dilemma.
