Default Buying 2001 XK8 - Need Advice

Hello all, I'm thinking about getting a 2001 XK8 at a local dealer. But I had some questions before I take the plunge.

http://www.cavenderaudi.com/ou/sanan...arXK8/A014122A

Is this a good deal for a car of this caliber and mileage? Seems like a decent deal to me...

Are there any issues with components that consistently fail, if so what are they and what are the costs associated with replacement.

I'm not a mechanic but I don't have a problem changing oil, brakes, and pretty much anything that requires general maintenance. Will I need special tools for the XK8? Is there anything that would differentiate it from other vehicles.

How reliable are the automatic transmissions?

What can I expect with a car of this age?

I'm really interested in this car, its in great condition, run great and was obviously garage kept. I'm just concerned with average cost of maintenance and overall reliability of this series vehicle.

Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Found the "I'm buying one of these" thread reading through. If anyone has anything to ad about this particular vehicle, I'd still appreciate the feedback thanks.

Often asked question: check the FAQ Sticky above near the top for:
'I’m buying a used XK8/XKR, what should I look for?'

Your car is past the Nikasil problem but certainly not the plastic tensioners. The ZF transmission has a higher than expected failure rate. My personal opinion but the 'asking' price is significantly above what I would pay for a 77k mile car.

Lots of cars out there.

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

I agree with Testpoint, seems a bit high for the model. If you go to Texascarsdirect.com there is one in their incoming list that is a 2003 for $18.9 w/49k mi. That is still a bit steep, but the 2003 is much improved with the 4.2L and 6sp tranny. If it were me I would be looking for a great '03 for the $15K they are asking for this '01, or a screaming deal on the '01. Of course, the asking price is just that... asking. I always low ball dealers and go from there with every intention of being willing to walk if they don't come around.

I agree, I agree - price is WAY too high for this MY. I also agree with looking at Texascarsdirect.com. I've purchased a few cars for clients from TCD. They are the best price/value Jaguar broker out there and their cars are always good. I often use them as a pricing barometer if I am looking elsewhere.

I have no affiliation with TCD, other than as a satisfied client. If you call them ask for Dewayne. Good guy and straight shooter.
